The great olive oil fraud - Why your extra virgin olive oil may not be virgin at all

(www.Borganic.org) You thought you were making an informed health choice by using extra-virgin olive oil in place of cheaper, low-quality cooking oils, right? You probably never thought that a tiny, expensive bottle of EVOO might be cut with crap or doctored with chlorophyll to make it taste like olive oil -- when in fact it was soybean or another health-compromising, cheap oil. According to Tom Mueller, the fearless author of Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil, 70 percent of the extra virgin olive oil sold worldwide is watered down with other oils and enhancers making them far from virgins and more like sidewalk hookers on the corner of 10th and Main -- not exactly good for your health or your pocketbook.

Mueller exposes the billion dollar industry, showing how EVOO is compromised world-wide. During volunteer testing by suppliers to authenticate what they thought were pure extra virgin olive oils, every brand submitted in Australia during 2012 failed the tests and none gained certification for being pure. Authentication tests at UC Davis in 2011 uncovered similar results.

How to recognize genuine extra virgin olive oil

It's difficult to tell by taste if the brand of olive oil you buy is truly extra virgin. Even the experts get stumped during taste tests. There are two ways that give a hint whether you have the real thing or a fake. Neither is absolutely fool proof; however, they will rule out the hardcore fakes.

Extra virgin olive oil solidifies when it's cold. When the bottle is placed in the refrigerator, it should become cloudy and thicken or even solidify. As it warms on the counter, it becomes liquid again. Any oil that doesn't thicken in the fridge is not pure EVOO -- simple as that.

Additionally, the real McCoy is flammable and should be able to keep a wick from an oil lamp burning. If your oil doesn't, it is not pure EVOO.

Buying genuine extra virgin olive oil

The best place to buy the real thing is from local producers whom you know. Of course, not everyone lives in Italy or near an olive orchard. The next best way to find genuine, extra virgin olive oil from companies or online is to look for those whose products have been tested and certified as pure and organic. Alternatives to using olive oil

As delicious and healthful as extra virgin olive oil is, some people do not like the taste; and of course, it's not meant for cooking at high temperatures. There are other delicious and healthy unrefined fats and oils available that make great alternates for health-conscious individuals.

Coconut Oil -- The best virgin or expeller pressed coconut oil is made without the use of high heat during processing. It's a highly nutritious food packing a wide range of health benefits. Virgin coconut oil can be heated for cooking or consumed straight out of the jar on a spoon.

It has no trans-fats and is stable when heated during cooking. It contains oleic acid, the main fatty acid found in olive oil and is monounsaturated.

Six natural remedies to help relieve migraines

(www.Borganic.org) For everyone who has had a migraine, you know how extremely painful they are. You know what the first symptoms are, such as vision loss or pins and needle feeling, and you dread what is to come.

There are many that depend on over-the-counter or prescription medication to relieve migraines, in particular Excedrin. Unfortunately, the manufacturer, Novartis, voluntarily recalled certain bottles of Excedrin due to chipped and stray pills.

Although this occurred in January, you may still find yourself without the popular over-the-counter pill that delivered relief at one point. With migraines being so painful and burdening, you may think that your only option is medications that are prescribed or over-the-counter. However, there are a number of natural options to ease the pain. The American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society specified some of the natural remedies to treat migraines.

Feverfew
- This is one of the oldest herbal remedies for migraines; this plant can be eaten raw or steeped in tea. Alexander Mauskop, M.D., and a board certified neurologist who focuses on headaches states that this herb can help treat migraines. The reason is because it contains a powerful chemical called parthenolide, which has been known to fight migraines. The earliest study comes out of Great Britain in the 1980's, showing that 70 percent of people who chewed a few leaves each day saw their symptoms improve.

Butterbur -
Any form of this herb is toxic, except for the processed supplement. The chemicals in butterbur help relieve spasms and decrease inflammation, which can cause headaches. Another study on migraines showed that patients who took 75 milligrams of butterbur twice daily experienced 48 percent fewer migraines.

Magnesium -
Research done by Mauskop showed that people who experience migraines can be deficient in magnesium. A small study showed that the daily consumption of magnesium supplements reduced the frequency of migraines by 42 percent, compared to only about 16 percent in patients given a placebo pill.

Riboflavin -
Although this study found that riboflavin in doses that would need to be prescribed by a doctor helped migraine relief, it still helped ward them off. Riboflavin is found in foods like milk, meat, nuts and green veggies.

Omega 3s
- These healthy fats can fight off inflammation, which is likely to be the cause of many headaches and even migraines. A few daily recommendations are flax seeds, salmon, and fish oil supplements.

Water -
As obvious as it sounds, many headaches are caused by dehydration. If you know how to catch migraines early, drinking water immediately can actually stop a migraine in its tracks says Mauskop.

Most of these recommendations are person specific, and it is beneficial to try a number of things to see what works best for you. If you are tired of relying on medications to help your migraines, this is a great place to start.

Mineral deficiencies can be fatal to athletes

(www.Borganic.org) In the growing market of nutrition and health, where being a vegetarian, vegan, raw vegan, or fruitarian has been integrated into the mainstream diet of millions of Americans, one thing that is not being mentioned enough is the importance of minerals.

A quick rundown of the importance of minerals and their function shows us that minerals are critical to our entire physiology such as the teeth, bones, blood, muscle, tissue and nerve cells. They are integral to transporting oxygen to the blood, or the pressure of body fluids to pass through the body. For example, potassium, calcium and sodium help maintain the rhythmic beating of the heart. Minerals are the bedrock of hormones such as thyroxin and insulin, and of proteins such as hemoglobin.

Many people today, who work out on a daily basis, running miles on end are not getting the sufficient mineral consumption to replace all they have lost. Most athletes today depend on sports drinks, which are mostly based of water, sugar, salt, food coloring and potassium. They drink their shakes that tend to be stacked with rice or whey protein but not much else.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, 100,000 young men and women, as well as professional athletes die annually from cardio-vascular disorders as a result of sports. That's twice the amount of fatalities on American highways. Almost half of the 100,000 athletes play basketball, not boxing nor football. Something is wrong with this picture when athletes aren't fairing much better than couch potatoes. One of various reasons is the amount of sweat excreted compared to non-athletes. They sweat more in five years than a couch potato would in 75 years. If 60 essential minerals aren't consistently being put back in the body, then the body will be at risk.

There are many symptoms to mineral deficiencies, some are more difficult to find than others. One must be aware and cognizant of the behaviors or blemishes on ones body. Being focused on consuming foods which are dense in minerals are among one of the many answers. Maintaining a mineral rich diet should be a conscious focus. Food intolerance epidemic - Why does it happen, and can it be treated?

(www.Borganic.org) True food allergies are very rare, but observations and research lead to believe that there's a fast-growing number of people experiencing some type of food intolerance. Fatigue, bloating, diarrhea or other issues appear many hours after a meal. This delayed response makes it hard to know exactly what caused the problem. Also, the fact that food intolerance won't show on a regular food allergy test at the doctors office, results in a lot of misdiagnosed and overlooked cases.

While a food allergy results from an adverse immune response to a food protein, the cause of food intolerance is often said to be that the body for "various reasons" can't digest the food properly.

Dr. Art Ayers did his PhD in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. Since then, he's held various research positions, and he was an assistant professor at Harvard University. Most of his research focuses on gut and inflammation, and food intolerance is one of his main areas of expertise.

Dr. Ayers says that "food intolerance is based on missing bacteria in the the gut rather than inadequacy of human enzymes, e.g. lactase, or altered immune system. The vast majority of intolerance can be cured by changing the bacterial composition of the gut's microbiological community, the gut flora, rather than attempting to accommodate a permanent deficiency."

Studies show that symptoms of lactose intolerance are alleviated significantly after supplementation with yoghurt, probiotic supplements or kefir. Bacteria in these products have lactose digesting enzymes, and when they get a chance to grow in the gut they can transfer their genes to the bacteria on the lining of the gut. Persistence is key, and symptoms of intolerance persist until the gut flora adjusts. Celiac results from a complex interaction in the gut and isn't considered a typical food intolerance.

Carbohydrates found in grains, vegetables, legumes etc. are fermented by gut flora, and when our microorganisms are lacking the genes/enzymes needed to completely digest the food component, symptoms of intolerance occur.

In nature, vegetables are contaminated with species of flex Clostridium and Bacillus bacteria which are vital for proper digestion and development of the immune system. When we spray soil and plants with man-made chemicals we damage the fragile ecosystem, and extensive washing or cooking also gets rid of the naturally occurring microorganisms clinging to foods. Antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals, poor diet, excessive hygiene and bottle-feeding also contribute to the rapid increase in people getting food intolerance.

Treating food intolerance

Most diets recommend avoiding food intolerances. This will naturally alleviate some of the symptoms, but it doesn't help the underlying problem. Problematic foods should be avoided until new species of bacteria are added, and then they can be slowly introduced again.

Dr. Art Ayers recommends a variety of sources of beneficial bacteria when treating food intolerance. Bacteria interact with each other, food and cells lining the gut; and therefore, it's difficult to predict which types of bacteria become established in the gut. Besides fermented foods and probiotics, Dr. Ayers is a strong proponent of organic, minimally washed plants and plant products. Prebiotics, soluble fiber that feeds the beneficial bacteria, is also vital in treating food intolerance.

Woman shocks doctors by using superfoods like turmeric to treat cancer - and lives!

(www.Borganic.org) Maybe you've seen those commercials where a doctor is working on a construction crew, then it shows the construction worker in the pharmacy looking for the right medicine, telling you not to do your doctor's job because you wouldn't want him doing yours. It's quite a ridiculous analogy really, insinuating that there's a similarity in a doctor running a jack hammer, and you taking care of your own body, like that's someone else's job. No one else can maintain your body or has to live with the consequences of how you do so, but you. Duh.

In a similar tone, there was recently a story out of England about a woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer, had the traditional treatments, but then declined the follow-up pharmaceuticals in favor of managing her health with nutrition. There seems to be genuine surprise at her success. Which is.... surprising. What's the big shocker? There are numerous books, stories and websites out there documenting the success of "alternative" treatments to cancer. Before the age of Big Pharma, "alternative" treatments such as through diet, exercise, and supplementation, were the cancer treatments, and there was less cancer then too.

To fight it, you have to understand it

For anyone who wants to understand how cancer works, there is a wealth of information out there that explains the causes, lifestyle factors, percentages, etc. Cancer lives in an acidic, anaerobic environment. So, it stands to reason that a strict vegan diet of organic fruits and vegetables, a good portion of them raw, would correct that environment. It swings the pH back to neutral or even alkaline, it oxygenates the blood, and it provides the body with the resources it needs to fight the fight itself.

Many sources site animal protein as a culprit. It's more all mainstream food because of the toxic way it is processed and preserved. Xenoestrogens from chemicals used on non-organic plants are just as involved in ill health as hormone laden animal products. When ill, detoxing with an organic vegan diet containing lots of superfoods is the best place to start - you need lots of extra ORACs, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc. Take therapeutic doses of things like vitamin D, coq10, garlic, vitamin C. A balanced diet of all organic food is fine for maintaining health.

There's no way for any of us to completely avoid the DNA damage that leads to abnormal cells. The Cancer Society says that 50 percent of American men and 33 percent of American women will develop some form of cancer in their lives. Causes are not just from poor diet, smoking or alcohol, lack of exercise, and environmental pollution. It can also come from genetics, viruses, and exposure to chemicals from a variety of places. The best we can do is to take care of our bodies in a way that limits the number of cells damaged and the severity of the damage so that our bodies can keep up with destroying the abnormal cells and maintaining cellular equilibrium.

What is surprising...

We can't separate what we eat from our health. It's not surprising that a good diet begets good health. What is surprising is that modern medical practitioners don't address that angle more often, though they are doing so more and more recently. What is surprising is that nutrition is not always taught in medical school. How can that be? Would you take your car to a mechanic that doesn't understand the fuel system? Don't you expect your children's teachers to be educated in education?

Something else that is surprising is that using diet and ancient treatments is called "alternative" even though there is a longer history of using acupuncture or eating garlic, turmeric, and antioxidant-rich foods than the radical, barbaric modern treatments of radical mastectomies and hysterectomies. What is shocking is that we're hardly counseled in nutrition, but fully expected to take extremely poisonous pharmaceuticals that are often more deadly than the original illness.

We are sharing the planet with seven billion other souls now, with more coming daily. The world is increasingly toxic and having good health is becoming more of a decision than luck. Even some of us that exercise and eat well will become sick. Good food can only increase our chances of survival, let alone quality of life.

What is further surprising is why the English woman didn't change her diet sooner. She may have saved her breasts and a lot of headaches.

What's REALLY causing your headache?

Junk food junkies: dying for a fix

(www.Borganic.org) Junk food is over-processed and too easy to digest. Junk food requires very little processing by the body because it is mostly sugar, over-processed grains and empty fillers like hydrolyzed starches, cellulose and maltodextrin. The digestive system is like any other system in the body, if you don't use it, you lose it. Your gut becomes lazy.

The more junk food a junky eats, the more flaccid the digestive system becomes. The intestines are a long tube of muscles that contract in a rhythm that pushes food from beginning to end. On a junk food diet there is no significant fiber to exercise the intestines to keep them toned up and they become weak and distended. Digestion slows down, constipation happens and parasites flourish. Pouches of diverticula push through the wall of the weakened intestines causing pain and infection.

To avoid flaccid gut tone one needs a decent amount of unprocessed fiber in the diet. Plenty of raw veggies usually do the trick and help with gut tone maintenance. To restore the gut tone it takes extra exercise in the form of supplemental fiber like psyllium husk or flax seed. The bowels push against the bulk which scrubs the intestinal walls and strengthens the peristaltic movement of the muscles. Abdominal crunches, like sit-ups can also help prolapsed and sagging organs to return to better function and positions.

Complex digestive juices

When a junk food junkie lives off of devitalized and nutrient deficient foods, the digestive tract doesn't require complex enzymes to process the empty nutrition so it eventually quits making them. The body doesn't forget how to make them, it just makes less and less of them. When the repentant junkie changes the diet, the body can't make the required amounts of enzymes to glean the nutrients good food provides. Even on a new pristine diet, the junkie is effectively starving for nutrients. Never satisfied, the junkie turns back to the comfort of the easy food.

It can take years to destroy a digestive system and it takes many months of faithful diet and supplementing to restore it. To recover a junk food gut takes time and intervention. Critical digestive enzymes are needed to extract vital nutrients and supplemental enzymes are necessary until the system can make it on its own again.

Metal amalgam teeth fillings exude mercury vapor which suppresses our immune systems and destroys our digestive enzymes by upstaging the normal micronutrients that make enzymes work. Amalgams also suppress the thyroid, which further slows down gut function. Heavy metals from our everyday cookware destroy food nutrients and leach into our digestive system to further complicate our digestion (Teflon is the worst and titanium cookware is the best).

Complex junk food chemicals

Lots of chemicals are required to make unhealthy and devitalized food tasty. As the junk food junkie devours processed foods and their digestive tract becomes lazy, the detoxifying processes in the liver and kidney become overburdened with the plethora of indigestible chemicals being thrown at it. The overburdened liver has to store the excess toxins in fat to keep up with the toxic burden. This is especially true with high fructose corn syrup that is processed 100 percent by the liver. Fat cells contain up to 200 times the toxins than reside in the blood.

A conundrum arises when the dedicated junkie changes their ways. The liver is now free to tackle the stored toxins and the reformed junkie feels worse than ever, especially as the fat begins to dissolve and releases all the stored toxins at once. You can eat right, lose weight and feel worse than ever, but this lasts a short while. Activated charcoal can help ease the toxic burden on the digestive tract during acute weight loss but should only be taken short-term.

The fix

Restoration of digestive health is not an overnight fix. It is a lifestyle change and a commitment to your body for life. It's not easy, but it's easier than a slow death by junk food and disease!
