first town with food self-sufficiency by growing all its own vegetables

(www.Borganic.org) Different local authorities throughout the USA have been harassing homeowners for growing veggies or herbs in their front lawns. But in the small town of Todmorden, England, a grass-roots food movement has been started by one woman who grew veggies in her front yard and let neighbors pick them free.

It took six months before neighbors and passers-by got the notion that Mary Clear's lowered fence and signs encouraging people to pick veggies from her lawn was for real. Mary, a 56 year old grandmother, kicked off a scheme thought up with local Bear Cafe owner Pam Warhurst and others to engage in local guerrilla agriculture.

Soon, others joined in and they called the movement Incredible Edible. Now this small community has 70 large, raised beds flourishing with fruits and vegetables, all of which are there for others to take from without paying.

Even the Todmorden police station has a few of those beds on its premises. The police also allow others to come and pick from them. It's a high profile setting that lets others know it is okay to grow your own in Todmorden. (Source 1 below)

Mary and Pam realize that Incredible Edible isn't up to feeding all 15,000 residents of Todmorden yet. But their goal is to achieve that level of self sufficiency by 2018. They're working on getting more involved with growing veggies and fruits with a grass roots free educational system to help others learn how to plant and nurture communal food gardens.

So far, there has been no government financial support or interference with Incredible Edible, which has even sprouted up in another British town, Somerset. (Source 2 below)

It appears that USA community bureaucracies are number one in harassing homeowners who grow veggies or herbs in their yards. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

Local agricultural sustainability seeds elsewhere

Somehow, the seeds of improving urban planning to incorporate sustainable local and regional agriculture are being cultivated by various non-profit NGOs (non-government organizations) throughout North America and elsewhere. There are many of them, all apparently isolated from each other.

However, the USDA has promoted a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program as a network for like minded community farmers and farms to connect with local consumers willing to bear the financial burden of farming with various local farms.

From CSA literature: CSA is not about cheap food, which is usually neither nourishing nor grown with care of the environment in mind. CSA is about each of us being responsible. We encourage you to compare prices of a share at your local CSA to the supermarket's "cheap food." (Source 3 below)

Although American Big Ag representatives and government officials want to dismiss it as communist propaganda, Cuba rebounded from mother Russia's collapse with urban farm gardens on small urban lots and campesinos' (small rural farmers) sustainable agricultural efforts. (Source 4 below)

Now that they're back on their feet with lots of organic home grown foods, American Big Ag and biotech industries are trying to get into Cuba with their misleading statistics of high crop production. Hopefully Cuban officials won't be influenced by those carpet baggers.

A large scale international study has confirmed the obvious: Small local/regional organic, sustainable farming is better suited for feeding the world than Big Ag's "green revolution" or biotech GMOs. The USA was one of the few nations that refused to endorse the initial 2008 UN study. (Source 5 below)

The new AIDS - stubborn infection, Chagas, spread by insects

(www.Borganic.org) Chagas, a potentially deadly disease that experts say is spreading like HIV once did in its earliest stages, has been labeled "the new AIDS of America" by a number of tropical disease experts in a recently published editorial.

The authors, writing in the Public Library of Science (PLoS) Neglected Tropical Diseases journal online, said Chagas, which is caused by parasites transmitted to humans by blood-sucking insects, wrote that the disease is currently spreading through our hemisphere.

"It occurred to me one day how similar it is now with Chagas to the early years of the AIDS epidemic when they didn't have good drugs or an understanding of the disease," Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College, told the Toronto Star.

The disease is also known as American trypanosomiasis, because the insects who transmit it carry single-cell parasites called trypanosomes. Experts say the best known relative is spread by the tsetse fly in Africa and causes sleeping sickness, which results in swelling of the brain.

Chagas infects 300,000 in the U.S.

One report said the disease is often transmitted by "kissing bugs," a sub-family of blood suckers that are also known as assassin bugs that like to target the lip area (hence their name).

The authors, several of whom are experts from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said that like AIDS, the incubation time for Chagas disease is long, and it is very hard to cure once a person contracts it.

It infects about 8 million people in the hemisphere but they mostly live in Bolivia, Mexico, Central America and Colombia. Still, about 300,000 people infected with Chagas live in the U.S. - many of whom are immigrants, The New York Times reported.

According to reports, Chagas can be transmitted to children by the mother, or it can be contracted through a blood transfusion. Some 25 percent of victims will develop an enlarged heart or intestines, which can then fail or burst, causing instant death.

Treatment isn't much better; it involves very harsh medications that have to be taken for as long as three months. And they only work if the disease is caught early, which is a problem because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Infection (CDC), while acute Chagas disease occurs immediately after infection, it "may be mild or asymptomatic."

"There may be fever or swelling around the site of inoculation (where the parasite entered into the skin or mucous membrane). Rarely, acute infection may result in severe inflammation of the heart muscle or the brain and lining around the brain," the CDC said on its Web site.

'Forgotten disease among forgotten people'

While the drugs are not as expensive as AIDS medications, they are in short supply in poorer countries. And, because the disease tends to occur more in the poor, not much money is being spent on finding new treatments, much less a cure. The disease kills about 20,000 people a year.

"Both diseases are highly stigmatizing," the editorial said.

The worst part may just be that few people know about Chagas, because not much is being said about it.

"It's a forgotten disease among forgotten people," Baylor's Hotez said. "Can you imagine having 300,000 people in the suburbs with a serious case of heart disease caused by a bug? We wouldn't tolerate it as a society, but because it's happening to an indigenous people, we're silent."

Right now, Chagas kills about 20,000 people a year. But researchers and experts like Hotez are worried that figures could rise dramatically in the coming months and years.

The Star reported that Hotez and his staff "are working on developing a prototype vaccine that would be given after exposure to Chagas, like a rabies vaccine."

Sun exposure reduces pancreatic cancer risk by nearly 50 percent

(www.Borganic.org) The health benefits of vitamin D are almost becoming too numerous to count, with yet another new study presented at the recent American Association for Cancer Research Pancreatic Cancer Conference in Lake Tahoe, Nev., shedding light on the hormone's specific anti-cancer benefits. According to the groundbreaking research, individuals exposed to natural sunlight, which is the most abundant source of natural vitamin D, are nearly 50 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer than others who are not exposed.

Dr. Rachel Neale, Ph.D., and her colleagues from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Brisbane, Australia, conducted a case-control study in which 704 patients with pancreatic cancer, and 709 healthy individuals with no history of pancreatic cancer, were evaluated based on blood serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D, the hormonal marker of vitamin D in the body. Each individual's birth location, skin cancer history, skin cancer type, tanning ability, and predisposition to sunburn was also taken into account.

The team then used NASA's Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer to assess each participant's level of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure to his or her birthplace, the data of which was used to place participants into various tertile groups for average UV radiation exposure. At the end of the day, researchers found that participants who lived in areas with the highest amount of sunlight exposure were 24 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer than individuals who lived in low sunlight areas.

Additionally, individuals with the most sun-sensitive skin, who are typically lighter-skinned individuals, were found to be roughly 50 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer than individuals with the least amount of sun sensitivity. Overall, there was a direct correlation between high sunlight exposure and low rates of pancreatic cancer in the study, a result that suggests vitamin D plays a critical role in pancreatic cancer prevention.

"High levels of vitamin D are associated with a lower risk of pancreatic cancer based on both observational studies of individuals and geographic studies of populations," writes the Vitamin D Council on their website. "Based on studies of breast, colon, and rectal cancer, vitamin D levels above 40 ng/mL (100 nmol/L) reduce the risk of cancer. Thus, maintaining vitamin D blood levels above 40 ng/mL may reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer."

Why vitamin D is crucial for vibrant health

Vitamin D, which is actually a pro-hormone, actually plays an important role in regulating the entire human genome. 1,25-dihidroxyvitamin D, also known as calcitriol, is responsible for unlocking the more than 2,700 genetic binding sites specifically designed for it that are located throughout the human body. And every single one of the genes affected by calcitriol plays a role in the onset of most major human diseases.

What this means is that vitamin D deficiency can cause all sorts of illnesses, including everything from simple colds and influenza to chronic diseases like heart failure and cancer. And since vitamin D can really only be obtained in adequate amounts through natural sunlight or supplementation with high doses of vitamin D3, it is crucial that every individual pay close attention to his or her vitamin D levels.

The best way to obtain vitamin D is through natural sunlight exposure. A fair-skinned person can produce enough vitamin D from about 15 minutes of direct sunlight exposure during the peak summer months, while a darker-skinned person may need as much as an hour-and-a-half of sunlight exposure. Sunscreens are designed to block out the UV rays responsible for vitamin D production in the skin, so it is important not to wear sunscreen when trying to obtain vitamin D from the sun (http://www.vitamindcouncil.org).

Another option is to supplement with vitamin D3. The government's recommended daily amount (RDA) for vitamin D is still too low, as most people need to take anywhere from 1,000 - 10,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 every day to maintain adequate blood levels. If you are unsure about your vitamin D levels, you may wish to have a blood test taken to determine what is an appropriate amount of vitamin D with which to supplement (http://www.vitamindcouncil.org).

Food freedom alert: City authorities in Ferguson, Mo., threaten to tear down another fully legal front yard garden

(www.Borganic.org) The city of Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, is trying to intimidate local resident Karl Tricamo into removing his organic, front-yard produce garden for what it says are numerous violations of local zoning laws. However, Ferguson's zoning laws do not, in fact, prohibit the type of garden Tricamo cultivates in any way, which means the city is illegally harassing him without reason or justification.

Rather than cultivate a typical grass lawn, which is usually a water- and chemical-intensive endeavor, Tricamo decided instead to grow organic fruits and vegetables so he could feed his son healthy, chemical-free food. All of Tricamo's crops, after all, are heirloom, organic, non-GMO, and non-hybrid, and he maintains them with the utmost care and respect, ensuring that they are not a nuisance to his neighbors.

But Ferguson code enforcement officials allegedly began to pursue Tricamo after what they said was a complaint filed by a neighbor. Tricamo received several letters from the city petitioning him to remove the garden and replace it with a typical lawn in order to achieve "minimum standards," as well as at least six separate visits from code enforcement officials citing bogus code violations.

Ferguson code ordinances do not prohibit front-yard gardens

In several of the letters Tricamo received from city officials, code violations were specified that had nothing to do with front-yard gardens, and that in no way prohibited residents from cultivating them. Local media reporting on the issue have largely ignored this issue, but Tricamo himself has been posting links to detailed code provisions in forums and article comment sections in order to disseminate the truth.

You can view the city's code violation citations and their irrelevance to Tricamo's garden here (you may need to log in to Facebook to view this information): www.facebook.com

Despite its antiquity, Ferguson's ordinance codes actually permit the growing of fruits and vegetables both in the front and rear yards of urban residences. And yet Ferguson officials are spreading lies and misinformation, and are trying to strong-arm Tricamo into caving to their unlawful demands that he remove the garden, or at least make it much smaller than it is.

You can see pictures and video footage of Tricamo's well-kept, organic garden here: http://nocostl.com

Meanwhile, other local residents and neighbors have spoken out about the city's misplaced priorities in their unwarranted pursuit of Tricamo. While many Ferguson neighborhoods are riddled with homes that have unkempt lawns overgrown with weeds, or that are littered with trash and nuisance vehicles, the city is busy pursuing a responsible father cultivating a fully-legal organic garden in order to feed his family.

Tricamo says Ferguson officials' public claims that they are trying to work with him on the issue are untrue. After being repeatedly refused a meeting with code enforcement officials, Tricamo is now calling for a formal investigation to determine the real reasons why the city is harassing him and trying to shut down his garden.

Licorice root extract proven to decrease liver enzymes

(www.Borganic.org) Analysis of a small sample of blood is used for determining the amount of enzyme production of the liver, thus providing a marker for liver health in general. When the liver is distressed, damaged, or diseased, liver cells leak two specific enzymes into the blood stream.

The enzymes counted for liver function are transaminase enzymes, which are important in the production of various amino acids. Transaminase enzyme concentrations are measured in blood serum. The two types of transaminase analyzed for liver function are alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST).

ALT and AST high counts or concentrations alone do not determine the exact liver issue, but it clearly shows the liver is in distress. This could be from a period of heavy drinking or pharmaceutical consumption, or it could lead to further testing for determining hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), cirrhosis, or cancer.

Licorice root for decreasing enzyme counts

Licorice root has been used by traditional medical practices for centuries to treat several diseases, including liver problems. The extracted main active compound of licorice root, glycyrrhizin (glis-i-rye-sen) is getting serious attention from the randomized, double-blind crowd lately.

It's not enough that herbalism, Ayruveda, and Chinese Medicine have used licorice or the extract glycyrrhizin for liver ailments for some time. Modern science must prove it works while keeping lab technicians working. A recent central Iran study in the Gastrointestinal and Liver Clinic of Qazvin set out to do that with 66 clinical test subjects, all suffering from NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease).

Thirty-three were given glycyrrhizin capsules while the other 33 were given starch capsules without knowing who was given what. Volunteering for clinical testing is not the best way to get free treatment for whatever is being tested.

The daily dose of two grams of both the glycyrrhizin and starch capsules were given to all 66 for two months. NAFLD is relatively benign and usually treated by modifying lifestyle and diet. Metabolic syndrome or early stage diabetes as well as obesity bring about this condition.

However, NAFLD can progress into a form of fatty liver disease known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). NASH inflammation can lead to cirrhosis (liver scarring) and require liver transplants, with a standard mainstream medical approach. It appears that some fatty livers have been inadvertently used for surgical transplants. Not exactly a good deal for anyone needing a new liver.

Early markers for NAFLD and all other liver diseases are high ALT and AST enzyme counts. Excluding all other liver problems and isolating NAFLD from hepatitis or cirrhosis or cancer was accomplished with sonography and checking for autoimmune and viral hepatitis markers.

The subjects' drug and alcohol histories were checked as well. Of the 66 clinical trial patients, 28 were women and 38 were men. The mean age for all of them was 40. Their weight, body mass index (BMI), and liver transaminase levels, ALT and AST, were measured before and after the study.

After the two month trial period, the treatment group showed a significant decrease in ALT and AST counts, where as the control group consuming starch pills showed a minor decrease. The BMI (body mass index) also decreased among the subject group, while the control group had a slight BMI increase.

The authors of the trial concluded that taking licorice root or glycyrrhizin licorice root extracts is safe and effective for reducing ALT and AST concentrations. They also recommended the usual "further studies" talking points that could give Big Pharma time to develop a synthetic version of glycyrrhizin.

Meanwhile, inexpensive natural licorice root and glycyrrhizin supplements are available online for you to treat your liver.

Associated Press caught lying about water fluoridation

(www.Borganic.org) It seems as though every time an American town or city drops the added fluoride chemicals from its water supply, the dinosaur media comes out with its usual talking points about how water fluoridation is one of the greatest public health interventions ever granted by the government to its minions, and that without added fluoride chemicals, everyone's teeth would rot right out of their heads.

These are just a few of the many deluded and outdated lies that get repeated over and over, ad nauseam, every time a community dares to challenge the prevailing fluoride dogma of the day -- and these are lies that, fortunately, many people are learning to simply disregard. But one of the more sneaky lies now getting repeated is the one which implies that added fluoride chemicals are no different than the naturally occurring fluoride elements already present in many water supplies.

In a recent piece published at emissourian.com, for instance, which reads more like an epitaph, the Associated Press (AP) bemoans the fact that Pevely, Missouri, a local community near St. Louis, has decided to stop adding fluoride to its water supply in order to conserve much-needed funds. And in memorializing the great loss of its beloved fluoride in Pevely, the AP makes false insinuations that added fluoride chemicals are exactly the same as naturally occurring fluoride minerals.

After commenting about how fluoride minerals are naturally present in water supplies throughout the St. Louis area, the unidentified AP writer explains how these levels are not "optimal." He or she then goes on to say that cities that fluoridate their water supplies are simply topping off fluoride levels to reach this so-called "optimal" range, making no differentiation between natural fluoride and chemical fluorides like hexafluorosilicic acid and sodium hexafluorosilicate.

Added fluoride is a toxic poison often loaded with arsenic, mercury, and other toxins

Last year, Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, put together a short video entitled The Fluoride Deception that explains where fluoride chemicals actually come from, and why they are different from naturally occurring fluoride. Many people were surprised to learn that fluoride chemicals are nothing but toxic waste byproducts of aluminum and fertilizer production, and often contain arsenic, mercury, and other toxic chemicals (http://tv.naturalnews.com/v.asp?v=42652E035A1B1BAAAE1F340B54694975).

But the AP utterly fails to make this distinction, and deliberately attempts to trick readers into thinking that the fluoride chemicals added to water are the same as naturally occurring fluoride minerals. This is becoming a common deception tactic as an increasing number of communities abandon fluoride, and one that the natural health community must address head-on when dealing with pro-fluoride fanatics who simply regurgitate what the health "authorities" are telling them.

The Fluoride Action Network (FAN) has a wealth of information about fluoride, including its many health consequences (http://www.fluoridealert.org/). Oddly enough, fluoride ingestion is linked to causing tooth decay, not preventing it. Fluoride has also been found to destroy bones and vital organs, and is now linked to the current epidemic of thyroid disorders since it displaces iodine in this important gland.

"There's no dispute that too much fluoride damages teeth, actually making them more decay-prone," says Paul Beeber, a lawyer and President of the New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. A 2007 study cited by Beeber's group explains that, "In most European countries, where [water fluoridation] has never been adopted, a substantial decline [75 percent] in caries (cavities) prevalence has been reported in the last decades."

Why we are three times heavier than we were in the '60s

(www.Borganic.org) The affluence of the Western world may be the envy of empires and kingdoms past, but much of that affluence has come at a heavy price in terms of health. The obesity epidemic is only getting worse, despite efforts in the U.S. and Europe to battle bulging waistlines with better research, better information and better dietary habits.

So, why is this epidemic only worsening? What is at the root of the problem? Quite simply, it's the food we eat. Or, more specifically, according to a recent report in The Guardian, what's in the food we eat.

On average, the paper said, the British population is three-stone (42 pounds) heavier than it was in the 1960s. And that is despite British children maintaining about the same level of activity now as then, and without consumption rising considerably in Britain (factors which are about the same in the U.S., according to researchers).

In its report, The Guardian says the culprit behind our expanding waistlines is sugar - excessive amounts of it - in the foods we eat.

The transformation began in earnest around 1971, when President Richard Nixon - facing a tough reelection battle - needed food prices to come down. To that end, he appointed agricultural academic Earl Butz from the nation's heartland - Indiana - to get the agricultural industry on board with transformational changes he wanted to make.

He sought to have farmers boost production of primarily one food item - corn - which they did.

Cheaper corn led to cheaper corn syrup

"U.S. cattle were fattened by the immense increases in corn production. Burgers became bigger. Fries, fried in corn oil, became fattier," The Guardian reports. "Corn became the engine for the massive surge in the quantities of cheaper food being supplied to American supermarkets: everything from cereals, to biscuits and flour found new uses for corn. As a result of Butz's free-market reforms, American farmers, almost overnight, went from parochial small-holders to multimillionaire businessmen with a global market."

By the mid-1970s the U.S. had a huge surplus of corn, and Butz traveled to Japan to look at a new "scientific innovation that would change everything: the mass development of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)." One of the best things about HFCS, Butz believed, was that it was especially cheap.

Corn syrup made everything sweeter, gave foods a longer shelf life (from days to years, even) and introduced food manufacturers to scores of other uses. But more than anything, the use (and misuse) of corn syrup, a hyper-sugar of sorts, was silently transforming our bodies as well.

The one area corn syrup had the greatest effect, was the soft drink industry.

Hank Cardello, the former head of marketing at Coca-Cola, told The Guardian that, in 1984, his company switched from using sugar in their soda to using HFCS. "As a market leader, Coke's decision sent a message of endorsement to the rest of the industry, which quickly followed suit," said the report.

Cardello, and no doubt the other soft-drink industry executives, saw no downside in using corn syrup. It was one-third less expensive than sugar, providing the company a large enough profit margin that made it much more palatable to mess with Coke's unique flavor. At the time, Cardello said, "obesity wasn't even on the radar."

Identifying obesity, then its cause

What was getting the attention of the medical and scientific communities, however, was a rising incidence of heart disease. Naturally the experts wanted to know what was causing it to rise.

"An American nutritionist called Ancel Keys blamed fat, while a British researcher at the University of London Professor John Yudkin, blamed sugar. But Yudkin's work was rubbished by what many believe, including Professor Robert Lustig, one of the world's leading endocrinologists, was a concerted campaign to discredit Yudkin." (At the time, the food and sugar lobbies tended to dominate research findings, if you follow.)

Obesity wasn't identified as a legitimate health condition until the 1980s, and it was later still before researchers discovered that the more sugar we ate, the more our bodies wanted.

"At New York University, Professor Anthony Sclafani, a nutritionist studying appetite and weight gain, noticed something strange about his lab rats. When they ate rat food, they put on weight normally. But when they ate processed food from a supermarket, they ballooned in a matter of days. Their appetite for sugary foods was insatiable: they just carried on eating," The Guardian said.

Sugar, more than any other food item, is leading the obesity epidemic. Read the entire report here:

Vitamin D protects against colds, flu and viral infections

(www.Borganic.org) Vitamin D is an essential cofactor in the prevention of a host of conditions ranging from cancer to diabetes, dementia and cardiovascular disease. The sunshine vitamin is a critical part of our evolution as it has been circulating in our ancestral blood for countless generations due to plentiful sun exposure. It has only been the past half-century that we have lathered ourselves with sunscreen and hidden in buildings away from the vitamin D producing effects of the sun, following the sage advice of doctors and other misinformed medical professionals.

Vitamin D is rapidly emerging as one of the most researched natural compounds demonstrated to promote human health. More evidence in support of the prohormone is provided by researchers in Spain publishing the result of their work in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. Scientists have found that insufficient levels of vitamin D are related to a deficiency in our innate immune defenses that protect us from infections, neoplasias, or autoimmune diseases, and can effectively shield us from the common cold and influenza during winter months.

Vitamin D levels diminish with age, increasing risk for colds and influenza

To perform the analysis and gather data for this study, researchers compared the changes in the blood levels of vitamin D among three groups of healthy subjects: youth (aged 20 to 30), middle-aged (aged 31 to 59), and elderly (aged 60 to 86). The scientists found decreased levels of vitamin D with aging, likely due to decreased exposure to the sun and a decline in the native ability of skin receptors to produce precursor levels of vitamin D, commonly found among individuals above the age of 40.

The research team found that the level of circulating vitamin D in the blood affected the toll-like receptor (TLR) expression measured on white blood cell lymphocytes and monocytes. Specifically, they found that the TRL most affected by a vitamin D insufficiency is TLR7, which regulates the immune response against viruses. In many geographic regions, limited sun exposure during darker winter months is closely associated with vitamin D deficiency and increased risk for colds and influenza outbreaks.

The lead study author, Dr. John Wherry concluded "This study shows that sunlight, or more precisely the lack of vitamin D could have a role in the seasonally higher rates of infection... since vitamin D supplements are inexpensive and generally safe, this is a really exciting discovery." It is best not to rely on sun exposure or dietary sources to obtain vitamin D. Most health-minded adults will want to supplement with an oil-based form of Vitamin D3 (experts recommend starting with 5000 IU per day), and test twice a year using the 25(OH)D blood test to confirm optimal levels above 50 ng/mL to achieve optimal protection against colds, flu, and many viral infection strains.

Five things you can do to guard against Alzheimers

(www.Borganic.org) A study led by Dr. Patricia Boyle of Rush University Center in Chicago has concluded that people with greater life purpose maintained cognitive ability better than those who weren't leading a purposeful life.

Dr. Boyle and her team wanted to establish a strategy for avoiding Alzheimer's consequences rather than attempting to find a way of keeping brain plaques and tangles from accumulating.

After following 246 senior citizens -- with up to ten years of annual cognitive exams and neurological testing -- and quizzing them about life missions and then doing brain autopsies after their deaths, they reached a conclusion.

(1) Life purpose/activity: As people age, they're prone to getting brain plaques and tangles. But if they have a life purpose zestfully pursued, they avoid dementia despite those physical impairments.

There are many real life examples of people managing well as they keenly continue to pursue their life adventures, especially adventures that require mental focus and activity.

Many experts also agree that engaging in mental activities which are new or challenging as one ages also helps retain mental acuity. Walking briskly in nature a mile or so four days a week also helps maintain one's cognitive abilities.

Four specific nutritional approaches

(2) Coconut oil: After failing to get her dementia addled husband into an Alzheimer drug trial because they were no longer accepting volunteers, Dr. Mary Newport discovered the active ingredient in the formula tested was a synthetic medium chain triglyceride (MCT).

Getting patent rights for big bucks requires the creation of synthetic drugs. Synthetic drugs always produce side effects and their PR exceeds their efficacy.

Dr. Newport discovered that coconut oil contained natural MCT. Her husband had entered the darker side of dementia with his late stage Alzheimer's. Yet after around a month and a half he was almost completely recovered after taking a tablespoon of coconut oil twice daily. Metabolizing MCTs produces ketones, which dissolve brain plaques and tangles.

An Australian shared his escape from early stage Alzheimer's on YouTube using both coconut oil and niacin (B3), a supplement pioneered in orthomolecular psychiatry for many mental issues. Both episodes are here (http://www.naturalnews.com/034082_dementia_drugs_side_effects.html).

(3) Vitamin D3 and curcumin: The synergy of combining curcumin with vitamin D3 to prevent or reverse Alzheimer's is a recent development. Each substance alone has shown efficacy on dementia, so why wouldn't combining the two create a powerful synergy?

This has been recently proven to be effective without side effects (http://www.naturalnews.com/035328_vitamin_D3_curcumin_Alzheimers.html).

(4) Eliminate aluminum: Avoid aluminum cooking utensils and underarm deodorants containing aluminum. Vaccines contain aluminum that goes right into your bloodstream. Aluminum bypasses the blood brain barrier and accumulates in soft tissue cells that regenerate less often than other tissues, creating plaque.

The brain is an organ that is made of cells that recycle more slowly than most other organ tissue cells. Silica is ideal for removing aluminum from soft tissue and eliminating through the urine. The herb horsetail contains a lot of silica and can be made into a tincture to provide constant silica dosing.

There are also supplements and mineral waters sold commercially that are high in silica (http://www.naturalnews.com/034756_silica_anti-aging_heavy_metals.html).

(5) Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA): Alpha lipoic acid has demonstrated stopping the progression of dementia from early stage into late stage Alzheimer's with a daily 600 mg dose.

ALA's oxidative ability is coupled, reducing brain inflammation along with the some metal chelating activity for heavy metals, including lead and mercury (http://www.naturalnews.com/025722_supplement_brain_memory.html).

Dietary advice includes reducing fructose of all types and eliminating processed simple carbs. Brain cells are cholesterol based. Reducing fats for any reason is not a good idea (http://www.naturalnews.com).

Astaxanthin one of the most neuroprotective supplements yet

(www.Borganic.org) Over the past several years, astaxanthin has earned a reputation as one of the most potent and powerful nutritional supplements ever made. I first began spreading the word about astaxanthin in 2004 when I toured the BioAstin production farm in Hawaii and published a series of articles and interviews about it (http://www.naturalnews.com/astaxanthin.html). Since then, astaxanthin has become increasingly famous, being promoted by other natural health websites and, more recently, a national infomercial campaign run by another company.

Briefly stated, astaxanthin is a fat-soluble antioxidant with neuroprotective support. It has been extensively studied in clinical trials, and its manufacturer is able to make several qualified health support statements under existing FDA regulations, including*:

• May help protect the brain from abnormal neurological function.
• May help reduce the proliferation of breast cancer tumor cells.
• May help reduce inflammation in joints and tissues.
• Helps support increased muscle recovery and stamina.
• May help protect the body from cellular damage associated with highly oxidative foods.
• May help prevent UV damage to the eyes.
• May help the skin resist UV damage from excessive sunlight exposure.

Astaxanthin is used by endurance athletes, professional fighters, exercise enthusiasts and others who seek a competitive edge.

The Health Ranger's personal experience with astaxanthin

I have personally used astaxanthin since 2004. It was a crucial part of my dietary supplementation during my years in hand-to-hand combat training, where even at age 38 I was out-lasting the 19-year-old kids in class. These days, I spend more time working on the ranch with a chain saw or hauling bags of feed to the chickens, and I take astaxanthin every day along with a high-quality fish oil supplement from Living Fuel (www.LivingFuel.com). Because astaxanthin is fat soluble, it works better when you take it with a fish oil supplement. The combination is extremely powerful from a nutritional science point of view.

I credit astaxanthin with protecting my brain function, helping me stay mentally sharp and also keeping my physical endurance high. It's not unusual for me to walk 4-5 miles a day, and I sometimes do that while fasting for 24 hours, as I'm into intermittent fasting. In fact, yesterday I fasted all day while I was clearing brush, removing barbed wire, chain-sawing some fallen trees, and doing other basic farm work. Most people would have considered it a day of "hard work" and couldn't imagine doing it on an empty stomach. But I did it fasting all day long, drinking only Roobios tea in the morning and taking some astaxanthin and fish oils the night before.

The Health Ranger's top 3 nutritional supplements

If you want to stay alive and healthy while helping prevent chronic degenerative health conditions, there are THREE powerful supplements that I consistently recommend:

#1 - Vitamin D3. This is the single most important nutrient you can buy and consume. It alone can help prevent cancer, boost brain function, help prevent diabetes, prevent osteoporosis, protect heart health, protect mood and brain function, and much more. Nearly everyone is chronically deficient in vitamin D3.

#2 - Astaxanthin. As described here, this is the "king of carotenoids." Simply the most powerful antioxidant known to modern science. It's what turns the flesh of salmon bright red (and is believed to help grant them their phenomenal endurance while swimming upstream). (See available sources, below.)

#3 - Fish oil or marine oil (rich in omega-3s). This is crucial. A high-quality fish oil supplement boosts mood and brain function, prevents heart disease, improves skin health, and can even help lower high blood pressure by making your blood flow more easily. Some good providers include Nordic Naturals and Carlson Labs.

If you were to take only these three supplements and nothing else, you would very likely experience a profound difference in your health. In fact, if we wanted to turn America into a nation of healthy, intelligent people with genius children and highly productive senior citizens, we would want to hand out vitamin D, astaxanthin and fish oil supplements to everybody. It could literally revolutionize the future of any nation!

Of course, other nutrients are important such as vitamin C, magnesium, zinc and so on, but it has long been my belief that these top three (vitamin D, astaxanthin, fish oil) deliver the most profound positive results that people really notice and feel.

In other words, if you have not yet tried taking these three supplements every day for 30 days, you will, I think, be amazed at the difference they make. In fact, I urge you to do so.

It's okay to lie about pomegranate juice

(www.Borganic.org) Do you remember our recent story (http://www.naturalnews.com) about Coca-Cola getting away with advertising one of its drinks as "Pomegranate Blueberry," even though it only contained a measly 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively, of each of those juices? Well, we now learn that the federal government not only sanctions lying about ingredients in drinks, but will punish companies who try to tell the truth about those same products.

To recap:

Beverage company Pom Wonderful which, as its name suggests, manufactures drinks containing lots of pomegranate, lost a federal false advertising suit it launched against Coca-Cola's subsidiary, Minute Maid, which manufactures the aforementioned Pomegranate Blueberry, because while the ingredients are prominently displayed on the labeling, there is very little of them actually in the drink.

But a federal appeals panel, citing federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules, disagreed with Pom Wonderful. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled that said federal regulations say a company can name a drink after a "flavoring" that it contains, even if it's not the primary ingredient.

What makes the ruling even more incredulous, given the second part of this story, is the fact that Minute Maid's label on Pomegranate Blueberry says, "Help Nourish Your Brain" above a drawing of fruits. That, as you may have deduced, suggests a medical benefit from drinking this pomegranate concoction, even if there isn't much actual pomegranate in it.

What's 'deceptive' about the truth?

Enter Pom Wonderful, the company that actually puts pomegranate - which research proves can lower harmful LDL cholesterol levels, improve blood flow to the heart for cardiac patients, reduce thickening of arteries that supply blood to the brain, and lower blood pressure - in its drinks.

It seems the same federal court system thinks it's okay for Coca-Cola to sprinkle a little of the juice in its drinks and call it nourishment for your brain, but Pom Wonderful - whose drinks contain 100 percent pomegranate juice - can't tout the fruit's health benefits.

Just days after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals shot down Pom's lawsuit against Coca-Cola, a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) judge ruled that health claims made by Pom were deceptive.

The ruling from Administrate Law Judge D. Michael Chappell came after hearing testimony for months, from May through November 2011 - testimony which included appearances by noted diet and coronary expert Dr. Dean Ornish, who - among other foods - recommends eating pomegranates to improve cardiac health.

Note, too, that Pom Wonderful, a Delaware company which is headquartered in Los Angeles, has spent some $35 million over the past 10 years studying the health benefits of pomegranates, and relied on the results of that body of research in advertising its products.

Not officially sanctioned research

Chappell, however, said Pom's advertising "would lead reasonable consumers to conclude that drinking Pom's juice or taking its supplements would treat, prevent, or reduce serious health problems, and that it was clinically proven to do so," according to Courthouse News Service.

What's more, Chappell said in his 330-page ruling that while Pom's research indeed showed a general health benefit in consuming pomegranate, "the weight of the persuasive expert testimony demonstrates that there was insufficient competent and reliable scientific evidence to support" the company's specific claims.

Huh?

Well, all of this is much easier to understand if you look at it from this perspective. It's all about the Leviathan telling you what is, and is not, "healthy," and what you can, and cannot say, about legitimate research if it is not conducted or sanctioned by the high-and-mighty in D.C.

Pom Wonderful spent tens of millions on research that proves consuming its pomegranate beverages improves overall health. But because the federal government didn't make this discovery, then it's not legitimate and, therefore, inadmissible.

Now do these conflicting rulings make sense?

For the record, pomegranate is quickly gaining favor in health circles for its nutritional value as an antioxidant-rich fruit. It's health benefits are well-documented now, even if you don't read about them in some government agency's literature.

You might say a company that does its own research is tainting the results, but on the other hand, if the same company is later found to have falsified data, what implications would that discovery have for a business that wants to stay around for the long haul?

The top five superfoods to always keep stocked in your pantry

(www.Borganic.org) What is a superfood? While there is no specific definition for the term, a superfood is generally recognized by a few characteristics: high nutritional density and low calories, high fiber, high in omega-3 fatty acids, lots of antioxidant activity, and rich with phytochemicals that have the potential to prevent or even reverse disease.

You could say that the hallmark of a superfood would be getting more nutrition without synthetic supplements while eating less. Eating less is healthy for most of us because there's less of a digestive/elimination burden on our bodies from eating more than we need.

Adding nutrients the body needs but that diminish as we grow older is an immune system bonus. Be aware that it takes some time, weeks or more, for you to realize results from daily consumption of the following superfoods.

Choose one or more of these five superfoods daily

Chorella: This single celled, water-grown, chlorophyll-loaded algae is highly regarded by many. It boosts the immune system and helps detoxify. Taking chlorella and cilantro combined offers one of the best heavy metal chelating foods ever, especially useful for eliminating mercury.

It's most economical as a powder, but that form is not so tasty. You'll have to add to lemon/lime water and gulp or mix with juices and smoothies. But it's also available as tablets. Chlorella has strong cancer resisting capabilities also. Find out more here (http://www.naturalnews.com/026147_chlorella_cancer_body.html).

Spirulina: This powder tastes worse than chlorella. It's difficult for many to consume even with tasty liquids, but it's available in tablets too. Some prefer the spirulina flakes that are easy to add onto foods, if you don't mind the taste.

Like chlorella, it is simple microscope algae from ancient times loaded with phytonutrients. In addition to being an immune booster, it can assist with curbing an overactive immune system, which is often responsible for autoimmune diseases. Here are more details (http://www.naturalnews.com/025703_spirulina_diet_studies.html).

You'll be able to order either of these through the Natural News store (http://store.naturalnews.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=100151).

Aloe vera: The juice of this plant is commercially prepared for you to drink in small quantities as a health tonic. Avoid flavored or sweetened juices. Organic and not adulterated through processing is vital for optimum results.

It can be taken straight or with a fresh juice or water. Many AIDS and cancer patients cured themselves with higher than normal daily dosing of Aloe Vera. Read more about Aloe Vera's curative capabilities here (http://www.naturalnews.com/034738_aloe_vera_cancer_AIDS.html).

Barley grass: Barley grass is sold as a powder or liquid. Dr. Lorraine Day used it as part of her regimen for healing her cancer, and she promotes it constantly. Here's more (http://www.naturalnews.com/025185.html).

Pure powdered whey: This type of whey should be from grass fed cows that haven't been injected with antibiotics or hormones, and processed into powder with pharmaceutical grade purity. Don't bother with the often-flavored stuff sold as a protein for building muscle mass.

Pure powdered whey added to smoothies or mixed into soft foods will help your body create abundant glutathione, the master anti-oxidant that creates and regenerates antioxidants.

The digestive tract will not allow straight glutathione to come through. So a precursor or precursors are needed to allow you liver to generate them. Pure unadulterated powdered whey is the top glutathione precursor. Glutathione heals and detoxes the liver while building overall massive immunity (http://www.naturalnews.com/027114_glutathione_antioxidant_GSH.html).

Mike Adams has an excellent content-packed free ebook on Chlorella/Spirulina (http://www.truthpublishing.com/chlorellaspirulina_p/pdf-cat21249.htm).
