Stop USDA from allowing commercial plantings of GM eucalyptus trees

(www.Borganic.org) In 2010, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) granted approval to ArborGen, a multinational company that produces genetically-modified (GM) trees, to plant its GM eucalyptus trees on dozens of test sites across the southeastern US. Though not yet officially approved for commercial cultivation and distribution, these GM trees planted on test sites are still destroying local ecology and spreading GM spores -- and they must be stopped.

At least 260,000 GM eucalyptus trees, which are not at all native to the region, have already been planted on test sites in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and South Carolina, and ArborGen is currently seeking commercial approval from the USDA to commercially cultivate the trees. The company also has projects in the works to introduce GM versions of native tree varieties like poplar and pine, should the USDA comply with its current requests.

Besides the inherent dangers associated with GMOs in general, which include the uncontrolled spread of GM traits throughout the environment, eucalyptus trees are particularly troublesome because of the unique threats they pose. If given free reign to establish GM eucalyptus plantations, ArborGen's endeavors could have a disastrous effect on the environment.

In order to establish its plantations, ArborGen will have to clear-cut untold acres of biodiverse forests that sustain many unique types of life. By replacing these forests with a single tree species, and which in this case has undergone genetic tampering, there is no telling the extent to which these "green deserts" will negatively alter local ecosystems and contaminate them with GM traits.

Eucalyptus trees are also water hogs, and tend to be a big reason why California experiences intense and frequent wildfires. According to the Global Justice Ecology Project and the STOP GE Trees Campaign, eucalyptus trees' high oil levels combined with their deep tap roots tend to exacerbate drought conditions, which leads to increased fire threats.

And like GM crops, cultivation of GM eucalyptus requires the application of special pesticides and herbicides, which are a huge environmental pollutant. Cultivating thousands, if not millions, of acres of land worldwide with GM trees of any kind, as well as pesticides, is a recipe for environmental disaster.

You can read the entire press release about ArborGen's GM eucalyptus here:
http://www.globaljusticeecology.org...

Unleashing GM trees throughout the world is just a bad idea, no matter how you look at it. There is no societal or environmental benefit derived from cultivating GMOs -- they only serve the interests of their manufacturers by enriching profits and increasing monopolistic control over agriculture.

To help fight against efforts to commercialize GM eucalyptus, and potentially even other GM tree varieties, visit:

Gut health linked to anxiety, depression and autism

(www.Borganic.org) Anxiety and depression are commonly thought of as mental ailments, but new research has found that they may actually originate from the gut. With more scientific backing added to the idea of preserving gut health, anxiety and depression are now associated with gastrointestinal disease, including irritable bowel syndrome. The study even examines the role of poor gut health in the development of autism, a hot topic in the field of both mainstream and alternative health. Abnormal bacteria content in the gut, or too much "bad" bacteria, may play an integral role in the emotional and psychiatric health of humankind.

The average person has about 1,000 trillium bacteria living in the gut. Some of this bacteria is the result of lifestyle. Whether it be from taking pharmaceutical antibiotics or consuming meat containing antibiotics, the bacteria of the gut can easily be disturbed. This is particularly important considering that the gut is the powerhouse of the immune system. Gut bacteria performs vital roles to keep the body well, including fighting infections and extracting energy from nutritional intake. Therefore, upsetting the environment in which good bacteria resides -- or even altering the ratio of good to bad gut bacteria itself -- can result in infection and disease. Superbugs are a special danger to those with poor gut health, as the immune system is left to its own devices when antibiotics cannot aid in the fight.

Considering the essential role of gut bacteria in performing many of the body's most precious tasks, it is no surprise that gut health also plays a role in the development of depression, anxiety, and even autism. During the study, lab mice were given antibiotics in order to disrupt normal bacteria in the gut. As a result, there was an increase in brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) examined in the mice, which has been linked to depression and anxiety. When the antibiotics were discontinued, the gut bacteria returned to normal -- along with the brain chemistry of the mice. The difference between the mice and most humans is that these mice were only exposed to pill-based antibiotics. Many humans are exposed to not only antibiotics in their food, but a variety of other gut-altering chemicals and substances as well. From pesticides to preservatives, the gut is under constant assault.

"The exciting results provide stimulus for further investigating a microbial component to the causation of behavioural illnesses," said Stephen Collins, a professor of medicine and associate dean research at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

Premysl Bercik, an assistant professor of medicine and fellow researcher, said that the study highlights the possibility of using probiotics to help aid in the fight against depression and anxiety. Probiotics can help improve the ratio between "good" and "bad" bacteria in the gut, leading to improved overall gut health. Probiotics, however, cannot make up for poor lifestyle choices. Consumption of antibiotic-laden meats and produce sprayed with a cocktail of pesticides will ultimately lead to poor digestion and severely damaged gut health. Switching to locally grown organic foods in addition to supplementing with probiotics will put your gut health on the right track to overcoming depression and anxiety.

Use organic seaweed and coffee enemas for radiation removal

(www.Borganic.org) People seem to be in two camps these days. There are those who know that the radiation from Fukushima is dangerous and will have impacts, so they protect themselves through diet and supplementation. And there are those who think it`s all fine and even radioactive poisons with half lives of tens of thousands of years won`t harm them. The latter group will almost surely be stunned to find themselves with cancer, Alzheimer`s disease, or any variety of toxicity-induced diseases because they still haven`t understood that poisons cause disease and that there`s quite a bit each of us can do to influence the equation - without a doctor involved at all. Many people are eating seaweed these days and it`s an important step with any radiation disaster. Another important step is to get serious about detoxification - especially using enemas with coffee, seaweed and cilantro.

Why coffee, seaweed and cilantro? Well, coffee enemas have been around for ages. They actually used to be in the Merck manual as a standard for health - before the drug companies started completely running the show. Coffee enemas are key because they detoxify the liver and therefore remove tremendous amounts of stored poisons from the body and blood each time they`re done. This removal of poisons is the reason coffee enemas aid in so many problems.

You can also add the juices of a variety of cleansing foods and herbs to coffee enemas to intensify your detoxification effects. Essentially, these healing substances travel into your liver with the coffee, and then directly touch your bloodstream. Because they enter the body in this way, unhampered by digestion, they are far more powerful than if they were taken through the mouth. And because you`re doing them in an enema, the poisons are often removed in mass, in a way that may not even be possible through other means.

Seaweed, most people now know, contains natural iodine which protects the thyroid from radioactive iodine, by occupying our body`s iodine receptors. Brown seaweeds also have compounds that neutralize radiation, taking the radiation protection even deeper.

Organic cilantro is also key because it moves heavy metals out of the body - and metals are part of the radioactive mix that`s spewed all over Japan and the rest of the world. Cilantro also helps remove lead, mercury and aluminum - and most people have these brain damaging metals in them, just from standard living.

To make a coffee, seaweed and cilantro enema, just make a one or two gallon coffee enema (to fill and release several times) and cool your coffee with water before use. Then, add a handful or two of cilantro and seaweed into a blender with a couple cups of water to blend and add these strained liquids to your coffee enema solution.

Now just fill and release several times, retaining each enema about six minutes to let those poisons neutralize themselves and wash out of your body. With what`s going on, many people would benefit from doing this daily for a few weeks, or longer, and then perhaps occasionally on an on-going basis, as another standard protection protocol.

Of course, after enemas you`ll want to replenish your healthy bacteria too.

Ensure your organic meat is truly organic (Opinion)

(www.Borganic.org) It is no secret that people have become more and more conscious of good health choices and the value of high quality nutrition. Organic food sales have grown significantly over the last 20 years. This trend has led companies, which have always valued price over quality, to become the top organic food retailers. So has the organic label been tarnished? During this same period that organic food products have grown there has also been a significant increase in the use of genetically engineered foods. The pesticide/herbicide industry has continued to rise despite the organic craze. Factory farms and processed animal products are at an all-time high demand. So what constitutes something as an organic product?

Cows that feed on grass throughout the year as the primary component of their diet are tremendously healthy animals and provide extraordinarily healthy meat and dairy products. However, the standards for what qualifies meat to be marketed as `grass-fed` are quite disturbing. The standards state that an animal only needs to have a 30% grass diet to be considered `grass-fed.` This means that the animal can be fed a diet of mostly genetically modified corn/soy and still be considered grass-fed.

This is a key finding because meat farmers get paid by the pound. Grass-fed meat is leaner than grain-fed, so there is less profit per animal involved. Many formerly grass-fed farmers have switched to a grain finish with their animals. This means that the animals eat grass throughout their life until the last 60-90 days when they are fed grains to fatten them up before slaughter. This meat is still sold as `grass-fed.` The consumer is led to believe it is a 100% grass-fed diet.

Research has revealed the dangers behind meat that has a grain finish. It has been shown that within 30 days of switching from a grass-fed to grain-fed diet these animals have a significant proportion of inflammatory fatty acids and a large reduction in anti-oxidant capacity compared to animals fed grass throughout their lifetime.

The highest quality grass-fed meat products are from farms that rotate the cattle to fresh pastures regularly. If they are not rotated, cattle will often graze in one area and get less overall nutrients. Pasture rotation also decreases contact with potential disease causing pathogens. Cattle need to be closely supervised and rotated to fresh pastures on a regular basis.

Grass-fed and organic meats are most often fully vaccinated. Animal vaccines have much lower safety records and research behind them than human vaccines. The majority of animal vaccines are laced with mercury, aluminum, live viruses, formaldehyde, propylene glycol, MSG, sodium benzoate and other toxic components. These ingredients are still present within their meat upon human consumption. This has to be considered a serious health threat.

The best thing for a consumer to do is to develop a relationship with local meat and dairy farmers who use the highest quality farming methods and raise their cattle on 100% organically grown grass. It is a great idea to ask to tour the facilities. The most integrity based farmers will be happy to show you the farms and how the animals are raised and slaughtered.

Some smaller farms may not be certified organic by the USDA, however, they withhold extremely high quality standards. Many are unable to pay the fees associated with gaining organic certification. These farms may offer even lower fees due to the lack of organic certification. These smaller farms often have products that are equal if not better than the certified farms.

Beat insomnia naturally

(www.Borganic.org) If you have ever struggled to fall asleep at night or stay asleep through the night, you are not alone. It is estimated that over 30% Americans experience insomnia while close to 60 million people have sleep trouble in a given year. Chronic insomnia impairs mood and cognitive function while accelerating the degenerative process of aging. Beat insomnia today with natural strategies.

Poor sleeping habits and insomnia pose a very serious threat to one`s health. These health consequences include elevated cortisol and reduced human growth hormone (HGH). High cortisol induces elevated insulin and fat storage. Over time, insulin resistant diabetes and obesity are common. Elevated cortisol & lowered HGH levels create an inflammatory cascade that wears down joints, tissues, and organs.

Chronic insomnia accelerates the aging process throughout the body. This speeds up the development of degenerative diseases such as heart disease, cancer, Parkinson`s, Alzheimer`s, and osteoarthritis among others. Elevated cortisol and lowered HGH will also cause skin wrinkling, hair loss, poor vision, & muscle loss.

Getting a good night sleep on a regular basis is one of the best strategies for preventing and/or reversing disease processes. An individual should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Too much sleep can be just as damaging to the body as too little. The greater the stress an individual is under the more restorative sleep his/her body typically needs.

The first step to healthy sleep is creating an optimal sleeping environment. Have a clean, comfortable, well-fitted mattress. All lights should be turned off or turned away from the bed. The room should be fairly cool (70 degrees or so) as this improves sleep quality. Using a fan for moving air is typically a good idea to improve nighttime breathing and sleep quality.

Ideal sleeping hours for the greatest healing and anti-aging effects are between 10pm and 6am. A good general goal is to be sleeping by 11pm to get a good boost of HGH. Some experts suggest that every hour of sleep before midnight is equivalent in quality to 3 hours of sleep afterwards due to its HGH boosting effects. Do something to unwind your mind before bed. Great strategies are to read and meditate, keep a gratitude journal, or use something else that inspires and brings peace to your mind.

There are several natural remedies that can be used to help induce restorative sleep. A relaxation tea such as mint, chamomile, or valerian root works great. There are blends of teas that often use all 3 of these herbs to help promote relaxation. It is necessary to avoid any caffeinated foods or beverages such as coffee & chocolate within 10 hours before bed.

Almonds, bananas and milk are great sources of tryptophan. Tryptophan mirrors the results of Prozac, by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. Of course, it does this naturally and does not have the addictive effects of Prozac. Healthy serotonin levels help boost relaxation, confidence, mood, and restfulness. Bioactive milk peptides have been well-studied for their ability to induce sleep. Unfortunately, today`s store bought milk is highly toxic and inflammatory. However, raw milk from grass-fed cows or goats is very helpful as is whey protein. The best whey protein is from non-denatured, grass-fed cow or goat. This is extraordinarily rich in these bioactive peptides.

A great nighttime beverage to drink to help induce restful sleep would be organic almond milk, half a banana, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, a tablespoon of coconut oil and a scoop of non-denatured, grass-fed whey protein. This is easy to make and digests very easy in the body.

Genetically modified organisms inject DNA into intestinal bacteria

(www.Borganic.org) Food that contains genetically engineered organisms can transfer genetic material into the DNA of bacteria in the intestinal tract leading to a myriad of health consequences. Responsible scientists have been warning about the potential dangers of releasing genetically modified organisms into the food supply for years. Unfortunately these warnings have fallen on deaf ears and GMO production has continued to increase. New research is surfacing validating the grave warnings of these scientists. Studies showing infertility, insulin resistance, abnormal cell proliferation, and a host of serious health implications of consuming genetically modified organisms are growing in number.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine warned against the use and consumption of GMO's stating, "Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food." These health risks include: infertility, decreased immunity, antibiotic resistant bacteria, and poor insulin regulation. Companies pushing for GM crops state that the research shows no negative consequences for the environment or public health. The reality is a host of research shows troubling consequences from the consumption of Genetically modified food.

A study in Nature reported that the food we consume does create genetic changes in our children. The food and chemicals consumed in our diet change the mechanisms that turn on and off certain genes. In one GMO study, hamsters fed genetically modified soy had hair growth inside the pouches of the mouth. The incidence of hair growth within the mouth was markedly higher by the third generation of hamsters fed GMO soy. This single study should raise awareness of the potential ramifications of genetic engineering of food crops but it does not stand alone.

Studies have shown high pup mortality with GM soy flour consumption, abnormal and damaged cells in mice fed Bt potatoes, reproductive problems in both female and male animals fed GM soybeans, and the list goes on. Consumption of genetically modified organisms can lead to infestation of transgenes in the intestinal bacteria which could lead to serious health consequences.

In 1989 a company in Japan produced L-tryptophan supplements using genetically engineered bacteria to increase production. During this time there was an outbreak of a painful disease labeled eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome. Eosinophilia-myalgia is characterized by: debilitating muscle pain and cramping, numbness, weakness, burning sensations, tenderness and swelling of the extremities, severe fatigue, headache, cardiac arrhythmias, internal fibrosis, short term memory loss, and a long list of other symptoms. Eosinophilia-myalgia was easily linked to the genetically engineered supplement because symptoms were experienced rapidly after consumption. Unfortunately, tracking serious health consequences of genetically modified food in the future will prove difficult as many effects could take years or decades to appear.

Scientists have warned that it may take years for transgenes to displace the natural friendly flora in the intestinal tract. The widespread threat is evident as recent research has found 80% of unborn babies tested had Bt toxins in their blood. The bacteria in our intestinal tract could be permanently altered to contain genetically engineered genes designed to produce pesticides. Animal studies have shown that the DNA in the food we eat can travel throughout the body, having an effect on many organ systems and even on an unborn baby. Antibiotic resistant bacteria and destruction of the immune enhancing intestinal flora are just the tip of the iceberg. Despite current research genetically modified crops are increasingly making their way into our food supply. It is critical to join organizations that fight against the genetic engineering of food, or at a minimum lobby for labeling of these foods so that consumers can make educated choices at the grocery store.

Organic Ginseng - Combat the effects of radiation

(www.Borganic.org) Since the dawn of humanity, people have turned to natural remedies to cure illnesses and injuries, and one of the most valuable natural resources used to promote health and well-being is ginseng. Ginseng comes from the ginseng root, which is light beige in color and appears gnarled with a variable diameter along its length. Utilized in a large variety of medicinal applications, ginseng has been revered by cultures for thousands of years as a highly valuable resource capable of healing and improving the health of those who consume it. Notably, the root has the ability to repair the damaging effects of radiation.

Individuals are exposed to radiation in a variety of ways; the modern world is brimming with medical procedures, energy sources, and other items that expose people to radiation on a daily basis. Most commonly, cancer patients that undergo radiation treatment to shrink their tumors become ill with radiation poisoning, which can induce many side effects, including: the loss of hair, upset stomach, low levels of white blood cells, skin irritation, and mouth sores. If individuals are exposed to a large amount of radiation their symptoms will be much more severe, including damage to the central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, and respiratory system, among others. Though ginseng cannot cure the serious damage caused by this condition, it has been shown to prevent some side effects and combat others.

Ginseng has become a common item on the shelves of health stores, making it accessible to a large number of people. The popularity of the root has also allowed its dosage to be standardized, making it easier for individuals to incorporate it into their daily routine. Research indicates that between 100 and 200 milligrams of Ginseng twice per day can protect against radiation, but as with all supplements of this nature this research is ongoing. However, one clinical trial indicated that ginseng was able to speed up the recovery of individuals who had been previously exposed to radiation. The recovery included the healing of bone marrow, skin, internal organs, and blood cells.

Research to determine the full extent of ginseng's power to heal radiation damage to the body is still necessary to conclude how useful the ginseng root is in treating patients with radiation poisoning or those that are exposed to radiation, via cancer treatment or other methods. Currently, the studies indicate that the reaction of the body to the treatment is positive, and that ginseng is certainly a healing agent that should be utilized after radiation exposure.

For individuals looking for a natural way to heal the harmful effects of radiation, ginseng has proven to be one of the most effective remedies. With the capability to both protect against future exposure and heal the damage caused by past interaction, ginseng can substantially improve the health of people who are in contact, or have been in contact, with radiation.

Increase libido and treat cancer with Cordyceps

(www.Borganic.org) Cordyceps is one of the rarest plants used in herbal treatments and medicines. Although unrecognized by western medicine until approximately 20 years ago, it has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Its benefits include protecting the liver, helping prevent tumours and even increasing sexual libido.

Cordyceps contains a host of vitamins including Vitamin E, Vitamin B-complex and Vitamin K. It also contains all essential amino acids, fatty acids, carbohydrates and nucleosides (which are needed to produce DNA).

Studies carried out at the Beijing Medical University showed that 64% of men and 90% of women who had previously suffered from impotence benefited greatly from using this herb. It is a tonic that is able to help prevent aging, build strength and improve the immune system and organ functioning. In another study, it was discovered that patients who took just 3 grams of Cordyceps a day experienced less shortness of breath and a significant reduction in fatigue levels.

Cordyceps has also been shown to improve blood circulation, strengthen the cardiovascular system, regulate blood pressure, improve the quality of one`s sleep, lower blood sugar levels, improve mental alertness and fight infertility. Cordycepin (a compound found in Cordyceps) is able to inhibit the division and growth of cancer cells. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

This wonder fungus is also excellent for improving liver and kidney functions and alleviating symptoms of respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis. Studies have also shown that Cordyceps is able to lower triglycerides by between 9 and 26% and to increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels by between 27 and 30%. Those suffering from cognitive dysfunction can benefit greatly from using this herb as well.

During yet another study, it was revealed that elderly patients who used Cordyceps on a daily basis discovered that they didn`t feel cold as easily as they did before using it. Further studies showed that it is able to increase Natural Killer (NK) cells. These are the body`s first line of defence against illness and infection. In healthy individuals, levels of these cells increased by 74%; whereas, patients who were suffering from leukaemia and melanoma experienced a staggering 400% increase in these infection-fighting cells after using this herb.

Organic fruit can be a complete breakfast

(www.Borganic.org) It is commonly known that fresh organic fruits are healthy and delicious, but most people are not even eating 3 servings a day. People know that they are good for them, but how much should they really eat? Many experts in health and nutrition are giving far different advice than the food pyramid. Doctors like Doug Graham and Timothy Trader - as well as athletes like Harley Johnstone and Michael Arnstein and as well as personal trainers such as Kevin Park - are all saying don't just eat 3 or 9 servings a day. They are saying eat upwards of 30 servings per day! It may sound extreme, but when you consider our primate physiology and check out the fitness results these people are getting, it makes sense. This article will give you the clear lowdown on how to get more fruit in (without having to spend much more money) and on how to transition easily to a healthier diet.

What not everyone knows is that every serving of fruit contains protein, carbohydrates, and fat. In fact, many fruit have more protein by percentage of calories than mother's milk!

Some fruit are so nutritious that simply by eating enough calories, one can meet nearly all the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs)!

For example: 2000 calories of cantaloupe provides 49 grams of protein, 480 grams of carbs, 11 grams of fat (including a whopping 2.7 grams of Omega-3), 100% of minerals and 92% of vitamins - falling short only on Vitamin B2 (providing 86% of the RDA) and Vitamin E (providing 29%). Simply adding a great source of B2 and Vitamin E like a handful of almonds provides the full range of nutrients.

So how can you do this and save time and money?

Step 1: Sample seasonal organic produce at your local farmer's market to find out what you like best.

Step 2: Buy a case worth of that produce - and make sure you get a solid discount. 25-50% off should be expected - if it is a large scale grower.

Step 3: Eat up meal sized portions of that produce for breakfast.

Breakfast is the best time to make dietary improvements - especially if breakfast comes after a bit of morning exercise. What better way than to start the day by making choices that you KNOW are good for you.

Make sure to get enough calories to sustain you. Many people don't realize that just because an orange and a candy bar might be around the same size, they are not equal in calories. One orange might contain 60 calories, while a candy bar contains 280.

If you need 800 calories to start your day, you can get that many calories from the ripe organic seasonal fruit you buy.

Here's a brief guide to getting 800 calories from various fruits: 8 apples, 12 oranges, 5 big mangoes, 7 bananas, 8 pears, 3 cantaloupes (yes, 3), or 5.5 pounds of edible watermelon.

It may sound like a lot of fruit, but consider that you are a primate and are physiologically designed for fruit before anything else. To make it easier, feel free to make smoothies or to simply lay out the amount of fruit necessary for a meal and continue eating as hungry.

Well, that's all you need to do!

Beat hypertension naturally | Organic foods

(www.Borganic.org) Poorly controlled blood pressure damages the kidneys and vascular networks resulting in heart attacks, stroke, & kidney failure. Over 1000 deaths are attributed to high blood pressure every day in the US. It is estimated that blood pressure issues account for over 40 million doctor visits each year. Lifestyle induced oxidative stress is a major culprit in this process. Beat hypertension naturally with good nutrition and specific superfoods.

Researchers have recently focused on oxidative stress as a major causative factor in the majority of hypertensive issues. Scientists have noted an imbalance in the production and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which damage vascular tissue. This imbalance also appears to create metabolic shifts to favor a pro-inflammatory environment that further damages vascularity and blood flow regulation.

When oxidative stress is elevated it can cause the angiotensinogen glycoprotein to convert to angiotensin. The hormone angiotensin causes sodium retention and vascular constriction. This 'oxidative switch' floods the system with angiotensin and dramatically affects blood pressure balance.

Professor Aiwu Zhou and colleagues at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research have studied specific nutrients and their ability to prevent this oxidative switch. They have highlighted a few specific anti-oxidant compounds that inhibit the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).
There are many medications designed as `ACE inhibitors` to affect this same pathway. These medications are great at lowering blood pressure. However, these medications never address the oxidative stress and therefore never get to the true underlying cause of the problem.

The best defense against the oxidative switch begins with an anti-inflammatory diet. This begins with a diet rich in phytonutrient dense vegetables, healthy fat and clean protein sources. Non-starchy vegetables, herbs, & teas are great sources of anti-oxidants and have very low carbohydrate content. Healthy fat sources include coconut products, avocados, olive oil, nuts, seeds, & purified omega-3 fish oil supplements. Healthy protein includes wild-caught fish, grass-fed red meat and free range chicken, turkey, and eggs.

A very useful superfood is non-denatured whey protein from cows and goats that grazed on organic grass alone. These whey peptides boost cellular glutathione stores. Glutathione is our bodies' most potent defense against oxidative stress. Professor Zhou has demonstrated that a diet rich in high quality whey protein acts as a potent ACE inhibitor. Additional research has shown that these whey peptides provide a second metabolic pathway for blood pressure control. As they fight oxidative stress, they inhibit the release of other vessel constricting components such as endothelin-1.

Certain berries and fruit extracts also contain powerful anti-hypertensive effects. Grapes contain the polyphenol resveratrol that protects the blood vessel walls and improves the way these cells respond to metabolic shifts that affect blood pressure. This nutrient appears to also reduce salt sensitive cases of hypertension. Resveratrol along with the anthocyanins found in berries also act to fight against the potent inflammatory factors caused by glycolysis.

Pomegranate extract is rich in some of nature's most powerful polyphenols. This has been demonstrated to act as a natural ACE inhibitor. Pomegranate has also been shown effective in blocking inflammatory damage induced by angiotensin in key tissues involved in blood pressure control. This nutrient also improves the activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). The presence of eNOS results in greater dilation of the blood vessel and less stress on the vascular wall.

It is recommended for anyone concerned about hypertension to adopt an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle and to utilize these specific nutrients. High quality whey protein can be used in shakes with berries and coconut, almond, hemp, or rice milk. Resveratrol and pomegranate polyphenols can be found in specific anti-oxidant blends.

Regulators knew Roundup caused birth defects

(www.Borganic.org) Regulators have known since 1980 that Roundup, the herbicide manufactured by U.S. company Monsanto, causes birth defects, and have done nothing to make the information public, according to a new report released June 7 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/...).

The report, "Roundup and birth defects: Is the public being kept in the dark?" by Earth Open Source, found that regulators knew the chemical on which Roundup is based, glyphosate, can cause birth defects in laboratory animals. Earth Open Source is an organization that aims to use open source collaboration to engage people in programs that help nourish humanity, increase equity, support food security, and preserve the Earth.

Regulators also misled the public about the safety of the chemical, according to the report. In one instance, the German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the German government body handling the glyphosate review, told the European Commission there was no evidence the chemical causes birth defects.

This is not the first instance of accusations against the world's best-selling herbicide. Earlier this year, researchers found that genetically modified crops used in conjunction with Roundup contain a pathogen that may cause animal miscarriages. Don Huber, professor emeritus at Purdue University, wrote an open letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack regarding the newly discovered pathogen, in which he requested a moratorium on deregulation of crops that are genetically modified to withstand heavy applications of Roundup, commonly called Roundup Ready crops.

"It is well-documented that glyphosate promotes soil pathogens and is already implicated with the increase of more than 40 plant diseases," Huber said in the letter, adding that the pathogen is implicated in spontaneous abortions in cattle at rates as high as 45 percent.

The situation could be catastrophic according to Huber's letter:

"A team of senior plant and animal scientists have recently brought to my attention the discovery of an electron microscopic pathogen that appears to significantly impact the health of plants, animals, and probably human beings. Based on a review of the data, it is widespread, very serious, and is in much higher concentrations in Roundup Ready (RR) soybeans and corn -- suggesting a link with the RR gene or more likely the presence of Roundup. This organism appears NEW to science!

This is highly sensitive information that could result in a collapse of U.S. soy and corn export markets and significant disruption of domestic food and feed supplies. On the other hand, this new organism may already be responsible for significant harm ...

Naturally, if either the RR gene or Roundup itself is a promoter or co-factor of this pathogen, then [approval of RR alfalfa] could be a calamity. Based on the current evidence, the only reasonable action at this time would be to delay deregulation ...

For the past 40 years, I have been a scientist in the professional and military agencies that evaluate and prepare for natural and man-made biological threats, including germ warfare and disease outbreaks. Based on this experience, I believe the threat we are facing from this pathogen is unique and of a high risk status. In layman's terms, it should be treated as an emergency."

Appropriate legislation unlikely

Although originally set to be reviewed in 2012, the European Commission decided to delay the glyphosate review until 2015. It will not be reviewed under more stringent, up-to-date standards until 2030.

"Our examination of the evidence leads us to the conclusion that the current approval of glyphosate and Roundup is deeply flawed and unreliable," according to the Earth Open Source report.

"What is more, we have learned from experts familiar with pesticide assessments and approvals that the case of glyphosate is not unusual," the report continued. "They say that the approvals of numerous pesticides rest on data and risk assessments that are just as scientifically flawed, if not more so. This is all the more reason why the Commission must urgently review glyphosate and other pesticides according to the most rigorous and up-to-date standards."

Secret GM wheat experiments begin in Australia

(www.Borganic.org) Australia's first trial of genetically modified wheat and barley is under way near Narrabri, New South Wales in the south-eastern area of the country. The goal of the GM wheat is said to be more nutritious bread (http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/gm-wheat-...).

How exactly the genes were altered to create this alleged more nutritious bread remains a secret. All that is known is that 14 different strains of wheat and barley will be grown. Some strains will allow researchers to look at enriching the crops with extra nutrients, and others will look at using nitrogen in the soil more efficiently, which could mean higher productivity with less fertilizer.

The CSIRO, which is running the three-year experiment, said the gene combinations in the trial are secret because they are subject to commercial-in-confidence agreements that protect the interests of the government research agencies involved and a U.S. company, Arcadia Biosciences.

Environmental groups and organic farmers oppose the GM trial, arguing that it is quite possible, and even likely, for the GM wheat and barley to mix with natural strains and 'contaminate' some of Australia's wheat crop with the genetic modification.

Environmental group Greenpeace opposes the trial, furthermore, because the safety of the modified crops for human and animal consumption has not been tested in any scientific trials.

The CSIRO says it will follow the safety requirements of the license issued by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator.

"The risk assessment concluded that this proposed limited and controlled release ... poses negligible risks to the health and safety of people or the environment as a result of gene technology," the gene technology regulator said.

Certain safety measures will also be taken, according to Dr. Matthew Morell, a researcher with the CSIRO's Future Food division.

"[The GM crops] will be separated from other crops by 200 meters, and wheat pollen travels about one meter, so it is highly unlike any will be found beyond that,' Morell said. 'Because these are patented technologies, there is still a need for restricting the details in terms of protecting commercial information."

Greenpeace is not buying it, saying that GM trail crops can easily break containment through human error, as past cases show. In one instance, seeds from a GM canola crop in NSW appear to have spilled from trucks driving down roads near an experimental farm, spreading the seeds and potentially contaminating organic farms.

"The Australian government's decision to go ahead with GM wheat field trials," said Greenpeace spokeswoman Laura Kelly, "amounts to a covert decision taken on behalf of Australia's wheat farmers, consumers and export markets that Australian wheat will be GM."

Researchers discover link between sugar consumption and mental illness

(www.Borganic.org) A cross-cultural analysis published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found a strong correlation between refined sugar consumption and mental illness. Researchers found that a high national intake of refined sugar and dairy products predicted a higher incidence of schizophrenia and depression. Research published in Neuroscience in 2002 found a high fat, high sugar diet reduces a key growth hormone in the brain necessary for memory and learning. Research into the correlation between diet and mental illness is finally expanding. This new research is shedding much needed light on the reality that diet does play a role in the incidence of mental illness.

The most provocative finding in the cross-cultural analysis was the consistent connection between refined sugar intake and worse outcomes for schizophrenia and increased prevalence of depression. Researchers also found that consumption of pulses or whole grains and high consumption of starchy root vegetables were linked to a lower prevalence of schizophrenia and depression. The connection between dietary habits and mental illness was not seen with healthy carbohydrate consumption but strongly correlated with refined sugar consumption. Sugar consumption causes a cascade of physiological effects that may explain the increased prevalence of mental illness.

Refined sugar consumption suppresses brain-derived neurotrophic factor or BDNF, an important growth hormone in the brain. This growth hormone is extremely important for the health of neurons in the brain. BDNF triggers new connections between neurons in the brain which is crucial for memory function. Studies have shown low BDNF levels in patients with depression and schizophrenia. The consumption of refined sugar has the potential to exacerbate depression and schizophrenia by contributing to low BDNF levels.

Refined sugar is notorious for causing increased inflammation in the body. Regular consumption of refined sugar can lead to chronic inflammation which can disrupt immune system functioning. Chronic inflammation is implicated in arthritis, some forms of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease among many other illnesses. Chronic inflammation has also been linked to a higher risk of depression and schizophrenia. Psychologists who have become aware of the recent research on sugar and mental illness have begun recommending sugar free diets to patients.

Dr. IIardi, associate professor of psychology at the University of Kansas, stated that he has encouraged depressed patients to remove refined sugar and refined foods from their diets. Patients who were willing to comply to these recommendations reported significant improvements in mental clarity, mood and energy. Research and patient experiences indicate that a diet high in whole grains and low in refined foods and sugar can provide significant improvement in mental health, clarity and reduced risk of mental illness.

Omega-3 fats hold the key to curing depression in the elderly

(www.Borganic.org) Omega-3 fats are part of our nutritional heritage and are shown to play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of debilitating conditions such as clinical depression throughout all phases of life and especially in the elderly. Neural cellular walls are largely constructed of Omega-3 fats, specifically the DHA long-chain component that determines how nutrients transport across cell membranes, electrical conductivity and the activity of critical neurotransmitters in cellular communications. Results published in The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging demonstrate that daily supplementation with Omega-3 fats may significantly suppress the symptoms of depression among elderly women.

The study found that depressed women that supplemented with 2.5 grams of Omega-3 fats daily experienced significant reductions in their symptoms. In an important finding, the scientists conducting the study found that the long chain fat was responsible for dramatic improvements in future outlook, self-esteem and quality of life. Researchers commented "This [quality of life] observation has never been achieved before and it appears of great value from the clinical point of view, due to the importance of these aspects in the elderly population."

One of the most common medications prescribed to adults, and especially the elderly, is in the anti-depressant classification. Anti-depressants cause a long list of side effects including blurred vision, weight gain, headache, anxiety and sleep disruption. Many of these effects lead to a lowered quality of life and actually worsen the condition being treated. Multiple studies have determined that Omega-3 supplementation cuts depression ratings by 50%, without the devastating side effects of prescription drugs.

A body of research published in the journal Nature Neuroscience pinpoints the critical nature of Omega-3 fats during maternal nurturing and early childhood development. Due to the rapid decline of these essential fats from the diet over the course of the past century, clinical depression cases have exploded as the balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats far exceeds the optimal 1:1 ratio. Researchers determined that insufficient Omega-3 fats in circulation led to disturbed neuronal communications that play a strategic role in neurotransmissions. The dietary fat imbalance influenced emotional behavior and increased anxiety, and it was the primary cause of depression.

The low fat diet so often prescribed by medical professionals and nutrition experts has caused a critical deficiency of healthy fats necessary for the development of the human brain from infancy to adulthood. In addition to the extensive library of research showing the effectiveness of Omega-3 fats in cardiovascular health and cognition, new evidence documents the need for this essential nutrient through all stages of life to improve self-esteem and to prevent depression. Health-minded people will want to supplement with 2.5 grams of combined EPA/DHA to naturally protect against behavior disorders and depression.

Organic trees and plants that grow easily in a desert garden

(www.Borganic.org) Many vegetables and herbs can successfully be cultivated in a hostile, semi-desert environment. One of the easiest and hardiest trees to plant in an arid climate is the Moringa tree, which is particularly well-adapted to the heat and/or poor, sandy soil. The prickly pear is a nutritious desert fruit that needs practically no water or maintenance once planted.

Planting and maintaining a vegetable garden in a desert biome comes with challenges such as a high-sodium table, sandy soil that drains quickly, lack of water and a burning hot climate. Although planting vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, cabbage and so on is possible in a hot, dry climate, planting water-wise vegetation is obviously a more practical choice.

Moringa Trees

Often referred to as a "supermarket on a tree", the pods, leaves, seeds and roots are all edible and highly nutritious. The leaves can be cooked like spinach or used in salads. Leaves can also be dried and ground into powder or used to make a green tea. With enough dried leaves, the tea can even be filtered. Its concentrated nutrition makes it useful in many different dishes.

Moringa can be grown outdoors in a hot, sunny climate or indoors in colder climates. A greenhouse is ideal in most areas.
Moringa seeds can be germinated by soaking them for 24 hours and then keeping them in a small plastic bag in a warm, dark drawer until they germinate (3 - 14 days). They can also be planted directly into the soil or in a pot, watered and left to germinate. Don't over-water as the roots may rot. Moringa trees love sun, but don't keep young plants in the sun all day.

If growing Moringa trees from cuttings, plant cuttings of around 50cm long in light, sandy soil, placing one-third of the length in the ground; once again don't over-water.

Prickly Pears

Prickly pear cacti grow well in many regions of the world, thriving in dry, arid regions. They grow best in sunny, well-drained sandy areas and produce sweet, succulent fruits.

Each cactus pad can support numerous flowers and subsequent fruit. These will germinate readily simply by scattering seeds in a seed tray and by leaving in a shady area and watering initially until germination. Seeds need a shade; whereas, plants need full sun. Growth from seed is slow, and up to four years may pass before the flowers and fruits appear.

Prickly pear cacti can be propagated by simply planting the pads into the sand.

Organi food Recipe ideas - Enjoy healthy beetroot

(www.Borganic.org) Beetroot is an ideal vegetable for both sweet and savory dishes. Packed with health benefits, beetroot has an earthy bitter/sweet taste that makes it ideal to eat either raw in salads or cooked in soups and stews. Read on for some great recipe ideas.

Baby beetroot is around the size of a golf-ball and is slightly sweeter than mature specimens. Beetroot leaves look a lot like baby spinach, with red stems and veins showing through the dark leaves. Often used in mixed salads, they have a peppery taste and a crunchy texture. Use as you would baby spinach leaves.

Choose beetroot that is firm to the touch and look carefully to make sure it is free of mold. Buy beetroot that has the stem and leaves remaining, preferably from an organic market.

Beetroot Health Benefits

Studies undertaken by the Queen Mary University, UK and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association have shown that beetroot juice can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. According to the research, naturally occurring nitrates in the beetroot produce a gas called nitric oxide in the blood which widens vessels and arteries.
In addition, beetroot helps liver, kidney and bladder function and helps to improve circulation.
Beet greens are a good source of calcium, iron and Vitamins A and C. Beetroot is an excellent source of folic acid, fiber, manganese and potassium.

Sweet and Sour Beetroot Soup (serves 6)

A variation on traditional Russian beetroot soup.

Ingredients:

1 small red cabbage, finely grated
1 large raw beetroot, finely grated
1 liter water
Himalayan salt to taste
1 tablespoon lemon juice
120g raisins
1 heaped tablespoon wholewheat flour
1 tablespoon butter

Method:

Boil the cabbage, beetroot and lemon juice, add the raisins and simmer until the ingredients are soft. Thicken by adding a little cold water to the flour and stirring into the soup. Stir until soup thickens; add salt to taste.

Spicy Turkish beetroot dip

Ingredients:

3 medium beetroot, trimmed
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1/4 teaspoon hot paprika
1/2 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves
2 gloves garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3/4 cup natural yogurt (optional)

Method:

Boil beetroot until tender, then drain. When cool, peel the beetroot and chop into pieces. Blend the spices and remaining ingredients until smooth.

Beetroot is also delicious roasted. Try chopping beetroot into large pieces, toss in olive oil and fresh thyme leaves and roast in a moderate oven for about 30 minutes or until tender.

Treat skin disorders and stomach ulcers with organic calendula

(www.Borganic.org) Calendula (or Marigold as it is most commonly known as) is found growing in many homes throughout Europe, South Africa and Europe. These flowers have been used for many years to treat conditions such as eczema, boils, abscesses and stomach ulcers. Its scientific name (Calendula Officinalis) has an interesting meaning in that the word Calendula refers to a calendar (owing to the fact that this plant blooms all year round), and the word Officinalis is the term used to refer to an alchemist's workshop.

The plant may be used in many forms, namely as a salve, tincture, oil or as a soothing tea. When taken orally, these flowers have been known to soothe recurring vomiting, fevers, stomach ulcers, boils and inflammation. It has been reported that when used as a tea, Calendula has helped to soothe conjunctivitis (commonly known as pink eye). Those suffering from bruising, sores, pulled or strained muscles and sprains can benefit greatly from using it in tincture or salve/lotion form.

These wonder flowers can also be used to treat a number of skin and other conditions, among them eczema, nappy rash, ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcers, minor burns, sunburn, gastritis, herpes sores, shingles, warts and sore throats. They are also highly beneficial in assisting with wound healing as they are an excellent anti-inflammatory. Calendula has even been reported to help ease menstrual cramps and earache. Those suffering from chicken pox and other bug bites can use Calendula as a salve to soothe itching and irritation. It is also excellent for detoxifying the body, as it cleanses the gallbladder and liver.

People suffering from gum disease can benefit by gargling with a tea made from the Calendula flowers. This plant has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, making it an excellent choice for those suffering from athletes` foot and thrush. Recent discovery has shown that the stem of this plant has just as many healing properties as the flower itself.

To make a soothing oil that can be used externally, you will need some of these plants in dried form. Place them in a glass jar which has a tight-fitting lid and cover them with extra virgin olive oil. Close the container and store in a dark, cool location, giving it a shake each day for 2 weeks. Strain the leaves from the mixture and add a Vitamin E capsule as a preservative. This can be applied to itchy or irritated skin to soothe it.

To benefit from Calendula in tea form, pour 200ml of boiling water over 1 to 2 teaspoons of the flowers and steep for 15 minutes. This tea may be taken 3 times a day. Lemon or honey may be added to vary the taste and flavour a little. A soothing cream or lotion can be made by combining 3 tablespoons of calendula oil with 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil, 1.5 tablespoons of shea butter and 1 tablespoon of cocoa butter. Place the ingredients in a pot and simmer them on low until they have melted. Ensure they are mixed well and pour into glass jars to store them. Leave them uncovered until they have cooled completely.

It is important to ensure that once these remedies have been made, they are stored in a cool dark place and used within 6 months of being prepared.

FDA sends US marshals to seize elderberry juice concentrate

(www.Borganic.org) Wyldewood Cellars, a Kansas-based producer and distributor of elderberry juice, is the latest raid target of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which recently sent US marshals to the company's winery in Mulvane to confiscate the "unapproved drug." According to the rogue agency, Wyldewood had violated provisions in the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) that restrict health claims for food items, warranting the sudden invasion.

According to Barry Grissom, US Attorney for Kansas, the FDA sent a warning letter to Wyldewood in 2006 to remove or modify certain health claims that it said were in violation of federal law, but the company did not comply. FDA officials claim that Wyldewood continued to make unapproved claims, and that seizing the product was the next step.

However, John Brewer, co-founder of Wyldewood, says that after receiving the initial FDA warning letter, his company hired a consultant familiar with FDA regulations to help his company reword their product descriptions. After making the appropriate changes, and clarifying that the elderberry products in question were supplements, Brewer says his company had done what it needed to in order to be in compliance.

"We haven't heard anything from (the FDA) since," he told reporters, noting that following the changes up until the raid, the FDA had ceased communicating with Wyldewood. "They've been in our facility multiple times. It's like, 'C'mon guys, we changed our label, we changed everything we thought we were supposed to do.' And then they show up and do this. (Supplements) seems to be one of their hot buttons these days."

This tactic, of course, has become all too common in recent years. A company receives a warning letter from the FDA, makes the appropriate changes, never hears anything further from the FDA, and out of nowhere gets raided. Such actions on behalf of the FDA are ultimately unwarranted and illegal, and the offended parties have every right to sue the agency for damages.

"You think you are doing things correctly, and there hasn't been any word, and all of a sudden you get this," said Brewer to The Kansas City Star.

The hepatitis B vaccine is linked to infant death, multiple sclerosis and autoimmune disorders

(www.borganic.org) The hepatitis B vaccine has been approved for all U.S. infants at birth, but is it really safe? For a "preventative" vaccination, the amount of complications associated with the hepatitis B vaccination are quite shocking. In fact, a number of peer-reviewed studies have found a relationship between the hep B vaccination and infant deaths both in the U.S. and Europe. With links to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), multiple sclerosis, and numerous chronic autoimmune disorders, some doctors are speaking out against the dangers of the hep B vaccine. The debate over the dangers of the hepatitis B vaccine may in fact be over, according to a court case reported on by Child Health Safety. In a case in which the court ruled in favor of the plaintiff, who had developed systemic lupus erythematosus as a result of receiving the hep B vaccine, the U.S. government was forced to admit that the vaccine led to the development of the disease. While the plaintiff was deceased at the time the decision was made, it was a landmark case in the fight to uncover the truth regarding the hepatitis B injection. The United States Court of Federal Claims document explains:"Tambra Harris ... filed a petition for compensation alleging that she suffered certain injuries as a result of receiving a vaccination. Among the injuries petitioner alleged that she had suffered as a result of receiving a hepatitis B vaccination was systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) ... A lump sum of $475,000.00 in the form of a check payable to petitioner as Administratrix of the Estate of Tambra Harris."Dr. Jane Orient of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) testified to Congress regarding the severe health dangers associated with the hepatitis B inoculation, stating: "For most children, the risk of a serious vaccine reaction may be 100 times greater than the risk of hepatitis B."With a little research into the transmission of hep B, government-backed infant hep B shots seem even more unnecessarily risky. Hep B is a viral infection that mainly targets the liver, and it is spread through direct contact with body fluids -- particularly blood and semen. Hep B is mostly transmitted through lifestyle choices such as unprotected sex or intravenous drug use involving sharing needles. These are not conditions that pertain to newborn babies, or perhaps the majority of people. Due to the strange decision to vaccinate newborn babies with hep B shots and a number of other factors, people have been questioning the safety and effectiveness of the hep B vaccination for years. The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) reported in the 90's, after the government began promoting the use of the hep B vaccinations:"In increasing numbers, parents across the country are contacting the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) to report opposition to regulations being enacted by state health department officials that legally require children to be injected with three doses of hepatitis B vaccine before being allowed to attend daycare, kindergarten, elementary school, high school or college."Simultaneously, as more schools and employers bow to pressure from government health officials and require individuals to show proof they have been injected with hepatitis B vaccine before being allowed to get an education or a job, reports of serious health problems following hepatitis B vaccination among children and adults are multiplying."For a "preventative" measure, the hep B vaccination sure does seem to carry a number of extreme risks. Due to an immune system that has not fully developed, newborn babies are particularly susceptible to toxic substances, making the already risky hep B vaccine even more of a hazard. Examine the research, read the reports by a number of doctors, and educate before you vaccinate.Sources:http://www.uscfc.uscourts.gov/sites...http://childhealthsafety.wordpress....http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/...http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/20...http://www.nvic.org/nvic-archives/n...http://articles.mercola.com/sites/a...Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/032579_hepatitis_B_vaccines.html#ixzz1O8Yvpw5j

Disease ridden patients refuse to make lifestyle changes

(www.Borganic.org) Several studies have found that even a heart attack or bout with cancer does not inspire patients to make the change to a healthy lifestyle. One might believe that being diagnosed with cancer or suffering a heart attack would inspire a patient to make changes. Unfortunately, the results of several studies expose the reality that patients are unwilling to take responsibility for their own health.

A study published in the American Heart Journal evaluated over 1,200 men and women who were overweight and had suffered a heart attack. In the year following their heart attack participants of the study had lost a mere .2% of their body weight. It is well established in current scientific literature that obesity increases the risk of not only heart disease, but diabetes, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, and many other serious health conditions as well. Despite experiencing a heart attack and facing an early death from unhealthy lifestyle choices, patients still refuse to make healthy lifestyle changes. The study published in the American Heart Journal is just one of several studies highlighting patients refusal to make lifestyle modifications in the face of serious lifestyle related illness.

A study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology followed over 9,000 cancer survivors evaluating healthy lifestyle changes following treatment. After surviving one of the most feared diagnosis, cancer, most survivors made little or no changes in their lifestyle. Less than 20% of the cancer survivors were consuming the recommended 5 fruits and vegetables a day. Only 1 in 20 of the study participants were following all aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Research has shown certain healthy lifestyle habits reduce the risk of recurrence and improve overall health and quality of life. The compelling research on lifestyle factors that improve health has somehow failed to promote change in most patients. Many health experts blame medical doctors for failing to inform their patients of the health promoting actions they can take to improve their health.

Researchers for the CDC interviewed 1,600 cancer survivors inquiring whether they had received guidance on lifestyle changes and dietary advice relating to the prevention of a recurrence. Only 1 in 3 cancer survivors stated that their physician offered information about diet. The majority of medical doctors fail to inform patients of the lifestyle related risk factors and preventative measures that can be taken. The weight of responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of the patients themselves to seek out information about a healthy diet and lifestyle. Patients should take the responsibility for the lack of lifestyle modification following the diagnosis of serious disease. The dietary and lifestyle habits that reduce the risk of disease are well known and well publicized. Patients would not have to search very far to find the information they need to make informed lifestyle changes. These recent studies expose the reality that the majority of people are simply unwilling to take responsibility for their own health.
