Human exposure to BPA grossly underestimated

People in the United States are probably exposed to levels of the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) at levels far higher than previously believed, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Missouri and published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

"Our data raise grave concern that regulatory agencies have grossly underestimated current human exposure levels," the researchers wrote.

BPA is a plastics ingredient commonly used to make water bottles and food containers, and to line cans of food, beverages and infant formula. Prior studies have found traces of the chemical in 90 percent of people tested. Because the chemical mimics the effects of estrogen, a male sex hormone and thyroid hormones, it can cause a wide array of developmental problems, brain damage and cancer.

Industry and government sources have consistently played down the danger from the chemical, however, claiming that the liver removes it from the body so quickly that its actual health effects are minimal even in cases of great exposure. This position is based on a 2002 study which has since been criticized for not using sensitive enough tests for the chemical.

In the new study, researchers used more sensitive blood tests on mice and monkeys that were fed a daily dose of BPA. Contradicting the findings of the 2002 study, they regularly found BPA concentrations equivalent to more than eight times the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) exposure threshold.

The EPA has ruled BPA exposure of up to 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight safe, but even this level has been criticized as dangerously high.

"In 2006, researchers found that BPA -- at concentrations lower than those already found in pregnant women, fetuses, and adults, and well within the range of our typical human exposure -- causes estrogen receptors to initiate unnaturally rapid responses, changing our basic cellular function," writes Donna Jackson Nakazawa in her book The Autoimmune Epidemic.

"Significant effects can be seen at extremely low levels of exposure -- parts per billion and even per trillion -- levels currently present in blood samples taken from people as well as animals."

How to avoid eating Genetically Modified Foods

Concern about eating genetically modified foods alarms many health conscious consumers. Mike Adams has likened these genetically altered foods to the Frankenstein monster and has raised concerns about the FDA's approval of a genetically altered salmon for human consumption. He has called the GM salmon a "Frankenfish." Concern that the GM salmon will destroy fish populations, such as the Atlantic salmon already on the endangered species list, is added to concerns about the health effects from eating this fish. There are a few steps consumers can follow to help avoid GMOs in their food.

Avoiding genetically modified foods is not easy because the foods are not labeled as such. Some organizations, like Whole Foods Market, the Center for Food Safety and the Non-GMO Project, are now working to support organic agriculture, to source products not containing any GMOs and to help consumers identify non-GM foods.

Buy Organic Foods to Avoid GMOs
Food that is labeled as organic, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), must be produced without the use of any chemical fertilizers or GMOS. Feed for animals that is sold as organic must contain only 100% organic feed. Foods labeled as "organic" are not allowed to contain ANY ingredients sourced from GMOs. Foods labeled "100% organic" must have only 100% organic food sources. Foods labeled as "organic" may be 95 to 100 percent organic, but the other five percent may not be from GMOs. Foods and products labeled as "made with organic ingredients" are only required to contain 70 percent organic food, but all of the ingredients, 100 percent, must be from non-GMO sources. This means that buying organic foods or foods "made from organic ingredient" will protect consumers from GMOs in their food.

Avoid GM Soy, Corn and Canola
The most commonly modified crops are soy, corn, beet sugar and canola oil. To avoid corn and soy means avoiding soy oil and corn syrup, which are added to many foods. Read labels to verify food contents of any prepared or packaged foods.

Eliminate Sugar from the Diet
Sugar from beets is commonly added to prepared foods, desserts and candies. Aside from the GMO aspect, white sugar contains no nutritional value. Instead, use sorghum, honey or molasses to sweeten foods.

Avoid GM Artificial Sugars
Artificial sweeteners are known to be carcinogenic. In addition, some are created from a GM derivative. These synthetic sugars are commonly added to candy, soda pop, diet coffee drinks, and even chewable vitamins and oral prescription drugs like antibiotics. Use fruit and fruit syrups to sweeten foods, or honey and molasses. Even if they don't add calories, the artificial sweeteners increase the toxic load to the body.

Fo-Ti is Widely Used to Restore Hair and Reverse Gray

The ancient Chinese herb Fo-Ti, also known as He Shou Wu and Polygonum Multiflorum, stands alone as a highly effective hair loss treatment amidst the plethora of hair restoration products such as vitamins, nutritional supplements, pharmaceutical drugs and gloppy creams. Fo-Ti is not only a superlative natural herbal product useful for hair restoration, but also reverses color loss and helps gray hair regain its pigment.

The Chinese believe Fo-Ti acts as a longevity tonic. It has many uses in traditional Chinese medicine and is helpful for ailments ranging from premature aging, weakness, infectious diseases and angina pectoris to impotence. It is reputed to restore energy and strength and is also beneficial as a digestive aid. All this and a cure for balding too!

All jesting aside, modern Doctors of Oriental Medicine use the herb to prevent premature hair loss, reverse color loss in graying hair and regulate many of the ills that appear with excess aging. Fo-Ti helps prevent thinning hair and restore dry, brittle and damaged hair. It shows efficacy for use in genetic pattern balding as well as hair loss from diseases such as hypothyroidism.

How Do Chinese Herbs Restore Hair and Prevent Hair Loss?

Chinese herbs treat more than merely the hair follicles and scalp. Oriental medicine views hair loss in direct correlation to reduced kidney energy and poor blood circulation or toxicity. Herbal tonics use a holistic approach and treat the entire body. Chinese medicine believes that by strengthening the organs of elimination, the kidneys and liver, and by increasing circulation to the scalp through healthy blood flow hair follicles can be stimulated into restoring hair.

Chinese Herbal Tonics Act as Baldness Cures

Improving the quality of a person's blood, balancing hormones and increasing circulation to the scalp and head can be achieved through a variety of Chinese herbs prepared as an herbal tonic or a tea. Fo-Ti or He shou wu is the primary herb used for hair re-growth either on its own or in combination with other Chinese herbs such as ligustrum, dang gui, drynaria and sesame.

Use of Chinese herbal tonics for hair restoration and thinning hair should be viewed as a long-term cure. It is not an instant fix. Once the inner essence or vital force is restored, the beneficial effects of these herbal treatments may be seen on the scalp and hair.

Course of Use for Fo-Ti for Hair Restoration and Revitalizing Hair Color

Three weeks to a year is recommended by Chinese herbalists as an acceptable period in which to see adequate changes to the scalp to restore thinning hair, alopecia and natural hair color pigment.

Consult a Doctor of Oriental Medicine or an expert in Chinese herbs for preparation and the appropriate dose.

Side Effects of Fo-Ti

Most side effects are mild and a simple adjustment of the dose will be enough to eliminate occasional diarrhea or stomach upset. There have been reports of severe liver problems in rare instances for sensitive individuals. In the instance of jaundice or yellowing of the skin or pain in the upper right abdomen over the liver, stop consuming the herb and seek medical attention. Some estrogenic effects have been noted and an increase in estrogen dominance has been noted in susceptible individuals.

For those looking for an effective product for hair restoration or to bring natural color back to graying hair, Fo-Ti may be the answer.

Hershey's brings non-GMO confections to Europe, but not to US

The Hershey Company is expanding its confectionery market to Europe. And the company plans to reformulate its Europe-destined products to be free of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) in order to meet demand and to comply with the non-GMO requirements of Asda, the U.K. subsidiary of Wal-Mart that will be Hershey's exclusive retailer in the U.K. However, Hershey's has no intentions of changing any of its U.S. formulas, all of which are tainted with GM ingredients, say reports.

According to an email obtained by GMWatch, an independent watchdog group fighting pro-GMO propaganda, Hershey's agreed to reformulate 21 varieties of its chocolate products, including Reese's brand chocolates, to meet Asda's requirements. And a report in Confectionery News confirms this as well, noting that the reformulations are strictly for the European market and not for the U.S. market.

"The key ingredients which have been re-formulated from non-GM sources include changing the sugar source from beet to cane sugar and using IP (Identity Preservation) soy lecithin," explained Julian Walker-Palin, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Asda, in an email to Peter Melchett, head of the U.K. Soil Association. "In addition to this the transportation and storage have been confirmed also as GM-free or cleaned before use with these products."

According to reports, Asda does not carry any products that contain GM ingredients, so Hershey's had to agree to work with the company to create appropriate new formulas.

In the past, many large U.S. food producers have argued that reformulating their products to exclude GMOs is not cost effective. But why it was worthwhile for Hershey's to change its product formulas for the European market, but not for the U.S. market, so far remains a question without an answer.

Terrorist may poison the food supply

Always on the terror streak, the mainstream media is now warning Americans that terrorists may strike the food supply by dumping poison into restaurant salad bars and buffets, for example. CBS News broke the story, quoting anonymous "intelligence" sources who insist that terrorists might use ricin or cyanide to poison foods in salad bars.

I have news for CBS, the federal government, and the terrorists: If you really want to poison the U.S. food supply, just use aspartame. It causes neurological disorders and yet remains perfectly legal to dump into foods such as diet sodas and children's medicines. You don't even have to dump it into the food supply in secret, either: You can do it right out in full view of the public. Heck, you can even list this chemical right on the ingredients label!

Or get into the MSG business. MSG, which is often hidden on "natural" foods under an ingredient called yeast extract, is a potent neurotoxin that promotes obesity and even cancer, according to some experts. Feed people enough MSG and they'll probably die of cancer sooner or later, and that counts toward the goal of terrorism too, doesn't it?

If you really want to get nasty and up the body count, start a hot dog company and dump sodium nitrite into your processed meat like all the other hot dog companies do. Sodium nitrite promotes aggressive cancers -- even in children -- and yet the USDA and FDA allow its use in the food supply (http://www.naturalnews.com/007133.html).

Better yet, feed the population genetically modified corn and then wait for the mutations to kick in. GMOs might actually be called a biological weapon because they cause so much harm to humans and the environment. (http://www.naturalnews.com/GMO.html)

Why be a terrorist when you can do so much more damage as a processed food company?

If you're a terrorist looking to poison the U.S. food supply, get in line, buddy! The food companies have beat you to it!

In the U.S. food supply right now, you can find toxic mercury, BPA, acrylamides, petrochemicals, dangerous preservatives, synthetic chemicals like aspartame, pesticide residues and artificial colors that alter brain function. The FDA doesn't seem to care about any of this, of course: All these poisons in the food supply are legal!

So here's a message to Al-Qaeda and all the other terrorists trying to kill Americans: Don't bother with bombs and missiles... just get into the processed food business!

Or, heck, if you really want to kill Americans with poison, get into the cancer industry! The "Al-Qaeda Cancer Clinic" could really rack up some body bags by doing what all the other cancer clinics do: Inject patients with chemotherapy and watch them die (http://www.naturalnews.com/029996_c...).

Seriously, if you want to kill Americans, all you really need to do is keep supporting conventional medicine and the FDA with its do-nothing position on dangerous chemicals that threaten the health of Americans right now. FDA-approved drugs kill well over 100,000 Americans each year -- a statistic that dwarfs the body count of any terrorist group.

Come to think of it, how do we know the FDA isn't already being run by terrorists? Their actions, which blatantly endanger American lives, are entirely consistent with the aims of a terrorist organization. (http://www.naturalnews.com/001894.html)

By the way, this is all depicted in a CounterThink cartoon I created in 2006 called The Food Terrorists: http://www.counterthink.com/The_Foo...

This cartoon anticipated today's terror news alerts by four years. That's because when it comes to the U.S. government's rhetoric on terrorism, it's not that difficult to see where they're taking it.

Want to know what the next four years will bring us? I'll soon be publishing a list of predictions for 2011 and beyond. Watch NaturalNews.com for that announcement.

In the mean time, you might want to steer clear of FDA-approved foods and drugs, because you just never know what's really in them.

Feds order farmer to destroy his own wheat crops

In arguing for S.510, the "Food Safety Modernization Act," there are all sorts of attorneys, legislators and internet commentators who keep claiming, "The government won't try to control the food production of small farms." They say, "Your backyard garden is safe" and that the feds won't come knocking on your door to control your seeds or foods.

As usual, these pushers of Big Government are utterly ignorant of the history in their own country. Because as you'll learn right here, not only CAN the U.S. government control and dictate to single-family farms what they can grow in their own backyards; the government has already blatantly done so!

In this article, I'll share with you the full and true story of how Big Government has already run rampant over the rights of individuals to grow their own food -- I'll even cite the US Supreme Court decision that "legalized" this tyranny.

How the tyrants came after a farmer named Roscoe Filburn

It all starts with a farmer named Roscoe Filburn, a modest farmer who grew wheat in his own back yard in order to feed his chickens.

One day, a U.S. government official showed up at his farm. Noting that Filburn was growing a lot of wheat, this government official determined that Filburn was growing too much wheat and ordered Filburn to destroy his wheat crops and pay a large fine to the federal government.

The year was 1940, you see. And through a highly protectionist policy, the federal government had decided to artificially drive up the prices of wheat by limiting the amount of wheat that could be grown on any given acre. This is all part of Big Government's "infinite wisdom" of trying to somehow improve prosperity by destroying food and impairing economic productivity. (Be wary any time the government says it's going to "solve problems" for you.)

The federal government, of course, claims authority over all commerce (even when such claims are blatantly in violation of the limitations placed upon government by the Constitution). But Roscoe Filburn wasn't selling his wheat to anyone. Thus, he was not engaged in interstate commerce. He wasn't growing wheat as something to use for commerce at all, in fact. He was simply growing wheat in his back yard and feeding it to his chickens. That's not commerce. That's just growing your own food.

But get this: The government insisted he pay a fine and destroy his wheat, so Filburn took the government to court, arguing that the federal government had no right to tell a man to destroy his food crops just because they wanted to protect some sort of artificially high prices in the wheat market.

This case eventually went to the US Supreme Court. It's now known as Wickard v. Filburn, and it is one of the most famous US Supreme Court decisions ever rendered because it represents a gross expansion of the tyranny of the federal government.

The US Supreme Court sided with government tyranny

The US Supreme Court, you see, ruled that Roscoe Filburn's wheat could be regulated and destroyed by the federal government simply because Roscoe's wheat production might reduce the amount of wheat he bought from other wheat producers and therefore could impact interstate trade.

Now stay with me on this, because this is a really, really important point to understand.

The federal government claimed authority under the Commerce Clause of the US Constitution (Article 1, Section 8), even though the Commerce Clause was originally written primarily to prevent states from erecting tariffs, not to allow the federal government to control interstate trade. But thanks to the twisted interpretation of the government -- and believe me, the government will twist every interpretation it can in an effort to assert more power over the population -- the feds claimed that Filburn's growing of his own wheat effectively reduced interstate commerce in wheat. Therefore, they reasoned, they could regulate his backyard wheat production (and order him to destroy his wheat).

Because of this US Supreme Court decision in 1942, it now means the federal government can order you to halt food production in your own back yard by arguing that when you grow your own food, the amount of food you purchase from other food providers is reduced, meaning that your food production impacts interstate trade and therefore can be fully controlled by the federal government.

In other words, the federal government claims the authority right now -- even without the Food Safety Modernization Act -- to knock on your door and order you at gunpoint to destroy all the food in your garden, your greenhouse or your farm. They can order you to destroy all seeds in your possession and all food harvested from your own garden. And they can do all this with the full protection of U.S. law by simply citing the precedent set in Wickard v. Filburn in 1942 as ruled by the US Supreme Court.

Why the naysayers will probably starve

Still think you have the right to grow your own food? I've heard all sorts of naysayers claiming that S.510 -- the Food Safety Modernization Act -- is no threat to small growers and family farms. They say the fears about S.510 are overblown and that the government can't possibly shut down your backyard gardens or small, local vegetable farms. They say this with the kind of smug certainty you might typically hear from a doctor who thinks he knows everything about human health (but who actually knows nothing about nutrition).

These naysayers tend to operate out of an assumption that Big Government will never take away their rights and freedoms and that expanding the reach of agencies such as the TSA, FDA, DEA and FTC with even more power and more armed agents is a good thing because the government always takes care of the people. We need more protection from e.coli, they argue, so let's unleash 4,000 armed FDA agents instead to protect us from bacteria. (But who will protect us from the FDA?)

What these ignorant naysayers don't understand is that government is constantly trying to expand its power to the point of tyranny. As a current example of this, look at what just happened with Chavez in Venezuela. He has now been granted what are essentially dictatorial powers over the country (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...). Chavez is now the King of Venezuela, and whatever he says is now law. Venezuelan citizens are now slaves to his tyranny, and they must follow his orders or be executed.

The United States is moving in precisely the same direction. First, power gets stripped away from the People little by little. Then it gets concentrated in the hands of a few regulatory agencies who write their own laws and who stay in power year after year because none of their officials are elected. (Think the FDA commissioner is elected by the people? Think again…) And then, over time, a few powerful individuals concentrate power from those agencies into their own hands. Before long, the country is run by a handful of power-crazed tyrants who disregard all freedoms and rights of the People.

This is precisely what the FDA is doing with the Food Safety Modernization Act. Backed by yet more funding and a new army of agents, plus the Supreme Court ruling that says the federal government can order you to destroy the food you're growing in your own back yard, the FDA can now pillage the countryside, going from farm to farm and house to house, burning fields and ordering the citizenry to destroy their plants, seeds and crops. This is exactly what they've been doing to raw milk producers and food coops, by the way (http://www.naturalnews.com/030136_R...).

That is no exaggeration. It is a documented "legal" precedent established in Wickard vs Filburn, and it can be used at any moment to destroy the ability of people to grow their own food, thereby making these people totally dependent on dead processed food (which is always FDA approved if it's dead, of course) made in food factories that churn out nutritional deficiencies and death.

What will you eat when the government destroys your local food supply?

You see, under the argument that your backyard garden "impacts interstate commerce," the federal government can order you to simply spray Roundup on your entire garden in order to kill it.

What will you eat then? When the GMO crops suffer a mass catastrophic failure, and the monocultured wheat dies from a global viral infection called ug99 "rust" (http://theemergencyfoodsupply.com/a...), what will you eat?

If the government has its way, you won't eat at all. You'll starve to death under the "protection" of the food safety thugs at the FDA who don't believe any "live" food is safe in the first place (hence their war against raw milk).

Those people who have the foresight to grow their own gardens and protect their food sources from the tyranny of the federal government may actually have a chance at surviving. The rest will simply starve while waiting in government food lines where the feds hand out nutritionally worthless cheese and other depleted processed foods that Sesame Street absurdly thinks are "superfoods" (http://www.naturalnews.com/030626_m...).

Big Government declares war on the local food movement

Make no mistake, folks: the government is attempting to destroy the local food movement. They are trying to wipe out small, organic farms that compete with corporate agribiz in the same way the FDA has long plotted to destroy natural health supplement companies who compete with Big Pharma.

It's all about wiping out the little guys and protecting the monopoly markets of the largest and most influential corporations that are poisoning the earth and destroying your health. As Wickard vs Filburn clearly demonstrated, the government does not believe you have any natural right or Constitutional right to grow your own food. In fact, the government believes it has the right to order you to destroy your food at the time of its choosing.

Don't think this could happen to you? Filburn didn't either. The idea that his own government would show up at his door and order him to burn his field of wheat was simply unimaginable. Similarly, the idea that the FDA would tear across the countryside wiping out small family farms is unimaginable to many Americans today. But that's only because they don't know their own history and they put far too much faith in the flimsy idea that the government somehow, in some way, respects the rights and freedoms of the People.

The obvious falsehood of that idea is evident in the way we are all being treated by the TSA. Who would have thought, just two years ago, that we'd be subjected to government-enforced molestation at the hands of airport security screeners? That idea seems unthinkable at the time, much like the idea that the FDA could seize your garden seeds or order you to destroy your greenhouse crops. Yet such actions are already within the claimed power of the federal government… merely waiting to be invoked at the time of their choosing.

Traitors to freedom

All those who voted for S.510 -- which includes the entire U.S. Senate, Republicans and Democrats alike -- are traitors to the freedoms upon which America was founded. They have thrust our food supply into the hands of tyrants who are just waiting to exercise their control and "authority" over as many people as possible.

Five years ago, I joked that people might one day be arrested for smuggling broccoli across state lines. Today, that joke has become a sad reality. The mere act of growing food and selling it to your neighbor without government permission is about to become a criminal act. And no, small farms are not "exempt" from S.510. They must provide financial information and apply to the FDA to be granted exemption status. That sounds a lot like slaves begging for mercy from the king, doesn't it?

Keep the big picture in mind as you consider all this: When teens are poisoned by the aspartame in diet soda, the FDA does nothing. When children are given cancer by the sodium nitrite in hot dogs, the FDA does nothing. When countless thousands of Americans suffer heart attacks and cardiovascular disease each year from the partially-hydrogenated oils used throughout the food supply, the FDA does nothing. But when you grow fresh produce in your own back yard and carry it to your local farmer's market to sell it without government permission, you will be arrested by the FDA as a criminal.

Shame on all those who supported this bill. May history have mercy on their souls for the suffering and injustices they have unleashed upon us all.

Organic cotton suddenly in demand among top textile brands

Consumer concern over environmental destruction has turned organic cotton into a hot commodity for top textile brands from Nike to Levi Strauss.

"There's a paradigm shift in the textile sector," said John Mowbray, editor of the magazine Ecotextile.

"Three years ago sustainability was not on the agenda," Mowbray said. "Now a lot of retailers and brands want to move regardless of what their suppliers think. They think consumers want transparency. Brands are driving change."

In 2009, with a global recession producing a 7 percent decrease in the global apparel and textiles market, sales of organic products increased 35 percent. This is consistent with the average 40 percent yearly growth in the organic cotton apparel and home textiles market since 2001.

"We weren't affected by the crisis," said H.L. Ding of the Chinese natural fiber company Hemp Fortex. "We're a small part of a market that's still growing."

Organic cotton production increased 20 percent in 2009, and is expected to grow another 20 to 40 percent through 2011. Organic products are now offered by big brands Nike, H&M, Adidas, C&A and Levi Strauss, and are sold at discount stores such as Wal-Mart in the United States and Tesco in the United Kingdom.

The corporate embrace of organic cotton may signal a major shift in the industry.

"Big companies always tread very carefully, but once they feel it's right for the market, it can be really big," Ding said. "They are taking serious steps."

Not everyone is impressed by the textile and apparel industry's green rhetoric, however.

"Sure, they are buying organic cotton, but at what price, and how is it made?" said Isabel Quehe of the Ethical Fashion Show. "Consumers need to think about where their clothes come from, whether the person who made them was paid a living wage."

Designer Christan Tournafol agreed.

"I saw an organic T-shirt selling for 2.90 euros [$4.00] -- at that kind of price you can only be producing it in terrible conditions," he said.

Beet juice provides incredible cardiovascular benefits that improve active function

Beetroots, also known as beets, are packed with blood pressure-reducing, heart disease-preventing nutrients that help maintain healthy active function and boost overall endurance levels in those that consume them. And a new study out of the University of Exeter (UofE) has found that not only do beets benefit athletes by boosting their performance, but they also help the elderly and people with heart or lung diseases to live more active, physically-functional lives.

Published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, the study builds upon a previous one conducted by the university that found that beet juice increases exercise capacity by 16 percent in athletes that drink it. Except this time, these same benefits were found to apply to non-athletes as well, including those that have trouble performing everyday physical activities.

"As you get older, or if you have conditions which affect your cardiovascular system, the amount of oxygen you can take in to use during exercise drops considerably," explained Katie Lansley, a Ph.D. student from the Sport and Health Sciences department at UofE, and author of the study. "What we've seen in this study is that beetroot juice can actually reduce the amount of oxygen you need to perform even low-intensity exercise."

Beet juice not only dilates blood vessels to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, but it also reduces the amount of oxygen muscles need during physical activity. This muscle effect makes it significantly easier for people of all ages, no matter what their health condition, to perform both low- and high-intensity physical activities. In fact, researchers noted that those who drank beet juice required 12 percent less effort to walk than those who did not drink it.

Based on a comparison between whole beet juice and beet juice that had its nitrates filtered out, the team was able to conclude that the natural nitrates are the primary active ingredient in beet juice that bring about improved overall performance and heart function.

Warning: Christmas colored chips, cookies and treats may be poisoning your children

Those Christmas-colored snack chips and store-bought cookies may look festive, but watch out: Eating them may cause side effects such as hyperactivity, especially in children. That's because nearly all Christmas-colored foods achieve their colors through the use of artificial coloring chemicals, including Red #40.

These artificial coloring chemicals are derived from coal tars. They're synthesized in chemical reactions in laboratories, then shipped to food manufacturers to be dripped into commercial food recipes. Nearly all "guacamole" products sold at the grocery stores -- such as guacamole chips and dips -- use artificial green coloring chemicals in order to trick consumers into thinking they're buying products made with real avocados.

Chemicals cause ADHD

The problem with all this is that scientific studies have linked artificial food coloring chemicals to behavioral disorders in children that can be diagnosed as ADHD (http://www.naturalnews.com/artifici...). This means food coloring chemicals alter human brain function. When combined with the other refined sugars and wheat ingredients typically used in holiday treats and sweets, artificial colors can cause both children and adults to become hyperactive, moody and highly emotional. (Sounds just like Christmas with the family, doesn't it?)

If you really want peace on Earth this holiday season, avoid buying (or consuming) Christmas-colored snack chips, cookies, treats or other manufactured food items. They are almost all made with artificial red and green food coloring chemicals.

And while you're at it, remember to avoid Christmas meat gifts because virtually all processed meat is made with sodium nitrite to make it appear red (the sodium nitrite acts sort of like a chemical color preservative and enhancer). What's wrong with that? Sodium nitrite sharply increases the risk of colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, brain cancer and leukemia (http://naturalnews.com/sodium_nitri...).

Please share this story with friends and family members so they can also avoid consuming coal tar chemicals in their holiday foods this year.

Have a wonderful (and healthy) holiday season! And please avoid the Christmas-colored poisons in the food supply.

(www.Borganic.org) Those who have been following NaturalNews for several years have heard me rave about Ron Teeguarden and Dragon Herbs. His company is considered by many to be the most pristine source of tonic herbs and Chinese herbs available in North America. Ron himself is a true-to-life "guru" in Chinese medicinal herbs and he is one of the most knowledgeable people you'll ever hear speak on the subject.

You can listen to my 2008 interview with Ron on our Podcast page: http://www.naturalnews.com/Index-Po...

As a follower of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a regular consumer of Chinese herbs, I have also been a follower of Ron Teeguarden for many years. I've interviewed him several times and published articles and interviews about him on NaturalNews. I'm also a long-time Dragon Herbs customer, and I have some favorite Dragon Herbs formulas that I'll be sharing with you in this review.

The little-known Chinese herb powerhouse: Eucommia Bark

My single most favorite Chinese herb is, without question, eucommia bark. This isn't an herb many people have heard of, but it has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for literally thousands of years.

Although FDA censorship won't let me tell you much about this herb, I can at least offer the simple statement that "eucommia bark may help support healthy bone function*." In Chinese Medicine, it is an element frequently used in formulas referred to as "kidney energy" formulas, as it may also help support and normalize regular kidney function.*

The challenge with eucommia bark is that it's really hard to find a trusted source. I looked for eucommia bark capsules for years, and I could never find sources that I trusted until Dragon Herbs came out with the formulation. Today, they offer both eucommia bark drops (liquid), and another formula called Frame Builder that includes eucommia bark, eucommia seed and a supportive collection of other plants and herbs commonly used in Chinese herbology.

Dragon Herbs offers a wide range of really premium-quality herbal products beyond Frame Builder, too. And his company is widely respected by the best-informed leaders in the natural health industry. Everyone I've ever talked to raves about Dragon Herbs and Ron Teeguarden.

Imagine my surprise...

Given all positive rich history I have with Dragon Herbs, imagine my sheer joy when I was informed that Ron was open to working with NaturalNews to make several of his top products available to NaturalNews readers at a great value. Dragon Herbs normally doesn't offer discounts -- this isn't a company that competes on price. When you're the best in the industry, you don't have to, and the truth of the matter is that Ron Teeguarden is meticulous about sourcing extremely high-potency raw materials for his formulas, and those raw materials cost a pretty penny... (see below for the true story about Schizandra...)

Yet, astoundingly, we've been able to put together a collection of Dragon Herbs formulas at really fantastic special prices for NaturalNews readers. You can see what we have available from Dragon Herbs right now on our specials page: http://store.naturalnews.com/index....

Here's a quick listing of what you'll find there, and the discount prices you see are only good while supplies last:

Frame Builder - Eucommia Bark was the second herb ever described in a written text on herbs in China, playing second fiddle only to Ginseng, "the King of Herbs." Eucommia Bark has remained a virtual icon of tonic herbalism in Asia for thousands of years. It has been consumed by billions of people, and is consumed by millions of people today as a superior, life-enhancing tonic.*

He Shou Wu - As a tonic to the kidney and liver functions, toning up the vital essence and blood, fortifying the muscles, tendons and bones, and to prevent premature aging, maintaining the youthful condition and color of the hair, strengthening sperm and ova, fortifying the back and knees and as the premier longevity herb of Chinese tonic herbalism.*

Cordyceps - Cordyceps Mushroom is one of the absolute superstars of the Chinese tonic herbal system. It is an extremely effective and powerful life-enhancing agent, ranking right up there with Ginseng, Reishi and Deer Antler. Because it is rare, potent and highly treasured, like Deer Antler, it is very expensive. This rare and precious herb is considered to be a moderately Yang primal essence (Jing) tonic of the highest stature.*

Eucommia Drops - Eucommia is the primary plant-sourced herb in Chinese herbalism used to tonify the Kidney Yang functions, in particular as it affects the lower part of the body and the skeletal structure. And although Eucommia is primarily known as a powerful Yang Jing tonic, it is also a strong Yin Essence (Yin Jing) nourishing herb.*

Super Adaptogen - If a person were to take just one formula, this could be the one. This is a full spectrum adaptogenic formula which nurtures all three treasures. An adaptogen is a substance which helps bring the body into a state of harmony with its environment by inducing chemical, cellular, and systemic balance. This harmonizing function reduces the effects of unfavorable conditions and stimulates the body's own immune and healing functions. These adaptogenic substances help the body to adapt to various stressful challenges presented by the environment and reduce the damage inflicted on the body.*

Will Power - Will Power is based on a wonderful tonic herb now called Polygala, traditionally know as the "Will Strengthener." Polygala is combined with herbs that strengthen Qi and Shen, helping us to remain "centered" during stress and thus allowing us to persevere through difficulties.*

Caralluma - Caralluma fimbriata is a succulent, edible cactus that grows across India. It has been in use in India for centuries as a vegetable and famine food. The cactus is used by the labor class in South India to enhance endurance and suppress appetite. Indian tribesmen are known to chew chunks of Caralluma for energy and to suppress hunger when on a day's hunt.*

Salacia - The roots and stems of Salacia oblonga, known in India as Ponkoranti, has been traditionally used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine to regulate sugar imbalance, and more recently it has been used as a dietary supplement in Japan. Salacia helps normalize blood sugar and insulin levels, and support healthy blood lipids. Ponkoranti is a woody plant found in the rainforests of Sri Lanka and India. Salacia oblonga extract suppresses glucose absorption. Intestinal enzymes normally bond to carbohydrates and turn them to glucose (the sugar that circulates throughout the body). Salacia contains inhibitors of sugar digestion and absorption.*

Salvia - Salvia (Salvia miltiorrhizae) is not a tonic herb because it does not nourish any of the three treasures. However, it is a very important herb in the tonic health system because of its critical role as a circulation enhancer. Salvia (Red Sage Root) has the capacity to activate blood circulation and to dispel “blood stasis,” or blood congestion. Salvia is a cooling herb that can dispel heat. NOTE: This is a very safe herb. However, it should not be used to treat any disease without the supervision of a doctor. Most doctors will allow you to take it, but some will not. This herb should not be used prior to surgery since it is theorized that it may cause excessive bleeding during an operation. Not for people who are easily chilled or who have cold feelings.*

Goji and Schizandra Drops - Schizandra chinensis is one of the elite tonic herbs in the entire world. It is staggeringly popular in Asia and its reputation is rapidly growing in America. It is known as the “Quintessence of Chinese Herbs.” It is the only herb known that tonifies all three of the Three Treasures (Jing, Qi and Shen). It is the only herb that enters all twelve of the meridian systems that nourish all of our internal organs and functions. It is the only herb that simultaneously tonifies all five elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal). No other herb compares in this capacity to nurture the entire body and mind, not even Ginseng or Reishi.*

Important NOTE about Schizandra: Good, REAL Schizandra is not so easy to get. Schizandra grows abundantly in the forests of Changbai Mountain, a non-polluted, pristine biosphere in northeastern China (Manchuria). Schizandra from that region is called Bei Wu Wei Zi (Northern Five Flavor Herb). It is collected annually in the fall by local collectors. It is also now being grown by some farmers at lower altitude in a neighboring region (Liaoning).

Unfortunately for most Americans, most of the high grade Schizandra is pre-purchased by a few Taiwanese and South Korean mega-herb companies who sell entirely to the vast Asian market. For a few years just recently, these companies controlled the entire world market, and real Schizandra was very hard to get – and the price was driven up significantly.

As a result, starting about 7 years ago, marketers starting selling a different species of Schizandra, Schisandra sphenanthera, especially targeting the American market where most buyers don’t know the difference. In China it is called Nan Wu Wei Zi, Southern Schizandra, because it grows in southern China, not northeastern China where the real stuff comes from. This variety of “Schizandra” is looked upon as a very inferior tonic in China and is not used as a legitimate Schizandra substitute by reputable companies.

U.S. marketers have either been ignorant of this, or have ignored the issue, and often even state that they are selling the Schisandra chinensis on their labels and in their literature, even when they aren’t.

Health Ranger comments on the best Dragon Herbs products

Here's my own experience with these herbs. I've been a customer of Dragon Herbs for over four years now, so I have a lot of experience using most of these products:

• I take Frame Builder and Eucommia Drops daily because I used to suffer from chronic lower back pain in years past, and I now take steps to nutritionally support my back and kidneys.

• I started taking He Shou Wu about a year ago after drinking some tonic smoothies made by Truth Calkins, the tonic herbal smoothie guru in California. Since then, I've learned a lot about why this tonic herb has been so popular throughout the history of Chinese Medicine.

• I take Cordyceps after my rigorous exercise sessions to help support my physical energy and stamina. I've also learned that there is a huge difference between cheap cordyceps (useless!) and high-quality cordyceps.

• I use Super Adaptogens to help support my body's response to the enormous stress I'm under each day as the editor of NaturalNews. I work extremely long hours and manage a huge number of projects on a daily basis. I believe that my nutritional support helps me deal with stress while remaining extremely productive and alert.

• I've just started experimenting with the Will Power supplement. I can't say yet that I've noticed any difference yet, since I've always had a lot of will power and never seemed to have any deficiency in that realm. But I like the herbs in this formula for lots of other reasons, too.

Caralluma has been extremely useful when I'm fasting. I don't know about you, but when I fast, there are days (usually after the third day) when the hunger just seems impossible to deal with. This herb has helped me control and normalize my appetite in a healthy way so that I can stay on my fast and get the results that I'm looking for.

Goji and Schizandra are two of my favorite herbs from the world of Chinese herbology, and I've long been a fan of their overall supportive effects. I take these on a regular basis, without any particular goal or desired outcome. I just consider them to be good sources of supportive nutrition.

• I do not have experience with Salacia or Salvia. I've never tried these formulas, but I'm considering trying Salvia to see if it might help reduce the time to recover from injuries (I've had a few significant martial arts training injuries recently, and I don't enjoy waiting very long for my body to heal). That would be an interesting experiment to try.

Holistic nutrition, not allopathy

In all these cases, keep in mind that these are not magical pills with overnight effects. The system of Traditional Chinese Medicine does not believe in the allopathic approach to health, where one symptom is eradicated with one chemical. Rather, TCM is based on using herbs in a multi-faceted support role that helps the body regulate its own health over time through the flow of natural biological and energetic processes upon which the human body depends for its vitality.

This is even quite different from the way many western consumers view nutritional supplements. A lot of people take supplements in a purely allopathic way, too: If they have high cholesterol, they'll take red yeast rice, for example. This is an allopathic point of view: The "symptom" is eliminated with the "treatment." But that point of view isn't quite accurate. It's not the full story of how nutrition really works.

Chinese Medicine takes into account a more holistic view of the interrelations between body functions and the actions of various herbs. Rather than trying to overthrow the body's biochemistry, Chinese Medicine attempts to support or improve the natural flows of blood, nutrients or energies that are necessary for allowing the body to naturally express its peak health potential.

In Chinese Medicine, isolated nutrients are rarely taken by themselves. In nearly every case, Chinese Medicine formulas combine multiple supporting herbs and ingredients into a complementary, synergistic recipe.

These Dragon Herbs products are formulated in alignment with the fundamental principles of Chinese herbology.

Keep learning more!

I strongly encourage you to learn more about Chinese medicine, and discover how additional nutritional support can help you experienced improved results in your life.

As with any supplements, I also encourage you to discuss your consumption of them with your primary care provider; preferably a naturopathic physician who understands holistic nutrition and has experience with Chinese herbology.

In covering nutrition, phytochemicals, disease prevention and other similar topics, I've noticed that in America, discussions about nutrition often leave out Chinese herbology. It's like a whole new realm to many who are into natural health -- in much the same way that Ayurvedic herbology is also a different realm to most Americans. There is truth to be found in every system of medicine, of course, including western medicine, but to limit our knowledge and experience to just one or two systems of medicine is to deprive ourselves of the enormous body of wisdom that's now available to us through the multiple systems of medicine practiced around the world.

Remember, western medicine is only practiced by a small fraction of the world population. Most people on planet Earth practice herbal medicine because that's what's affordable, locally available and has been proven safe through thousands of years of regular use. The more I learn about Chinese medicine, the more I am convinced that it is an extremely valuable, and often-overlooked system of medicine that deserves a lot more study. I also have a keen interest in South American medicine, of course, which is sometimes called "rainforest medicine."

In fact, here's an amazing interview with Alex Holland, founder of a TCM school in Tucson, Arizona. Listen to this interview and you'll be absolutely amazed, I think, at what you'll learn about Chinese Medicine: http://www.naturalnews.com/podcasts...

And if you'd like to hear my interview with Ron Teeguarden, recorded nearly two years ago, give that a listen. It's quite fascinating and you'll learn a lot about Chinese herbology: http://www.naturalnews.com/podcasts...

Once again, if you wish to take advantage of our sale on Dragon Herbs formulas, available for a limited time (at limited quantities) at the NaturalNews store, here's the link: http://store.naturalnews.com/index....

Enjoy exploring and learning! I love this subject, and I hope to cover TCM more in the near future.

thyroid disorders | Breaking News

Thyroid disorders are increasingly common. According to statistics by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), approximately 27 million Americans have a thyroid disorder. 1 in 10 Americans, more than the number of Americans with diabetes and cancer combined, suffer from thyroid disease. Yet, half remains undiagnosed because initial signs and symptoms are vague, ambiguous, and often seen in various disorders. The underlying factor in very common disorders such as infertility, hair loss, irregular menses, constipation, fatigue, weight gain, elevated cholesterol, anemia, or depression may be a malfunctioning thyroid. Fortunately, our current understanding of thyroid disorders shed light on actions we can take to maintain a healthy thyroid.

It is well-established that most thyroid disorders are autoimmune. The body's tissues, here the thyroid, are attacked by its own immune system via the production of antibodies. These antibodies can in turn cause the thyroid gland to be hyperactive, hypoactive, or inactive. Because autoimmune diseases as a whole affect disproportionately women, hormones are seen to play an important role in autoimmunity. Furthermore, it is observed that women with conditions involving hormonal imbalances such as endometriosis and PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) are more susceptible to thyroid disorders. Therefore, ensuring that hormones are balanced is one way to maintain adequate thyroid function.

Autoimmunity may also arise from a very interesting phenomenon known as molecular mimicry. Molecular mimicry describes a type of biochemical forgery in which protein sequences in bacteria, viruses, foods, or other foreign substances are similar or identical to sequences in human tissues. The immune system recognizes these mimicking sequences as foreign and mounts an immune response (a cross-reaction) to both the mimicking sequences and sequences in human tissues. Research has implicated cross-reactions with wheat and milk proteins in autoimmune diseases. Because not everyone who consumes these proteins will develop autoimmune cross reactions, it is a very good idea to obtain tests for food allergies and intolerances in order to determine suspicious foods that might trigger these reactions.

Iodine deficiency is a well-known cause of hypothyroidism. Iodine is an element that is essential for the production of thyroid hormone. Treatment of iodine deficiency by the introduction of iodized salt virtually eliminated goiters due to iodine deficiency in the 1920s in industrialized nations. Yet, a state of iodine deficiency can be created by many common consumer products.

Everyday consumables such as flour products, pesticides/herbicides/fungicides, synthetic perfumes, drinking water, and toothpaste contain halogens. Halogens are a group of highly active chemical elements that include bromine, chlorine, fluorine, and iodine. Bromine, chlorine, and fluorine readily displace iodine; this makes iodine less available to the thyroid gland for the production of thyroid hormones causing hypothyroidism. These halogens may also mimic the actions of iodine; this leads to the production of excessive thyroid hormones, leading to hyperthyroidism. Chlorine and fluorine are commonly found in tap water, toothpaste, and non-stick cookware. Bromine is a chemical frequently used in pesticides/fungicides, fire retardants, and many flour products. Eating unbrominated flour products and organic foods, reducing the use of synthetic chemicals and non-stick cookware, and purchasing a good filter to minimize chlorine and fluorine from drinking water are simple ways to lessen halogen exposure and ensure optimal thyroid function.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that influence essentially every organ, tissue, and cell in the body; it plays an important role in regulating metabolism and calcium balance. This article hopefully sheds light on actions that we can take to optimize the functioning of this very important gland.

Germany bans cultivation of GM corn

The German government has banned the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) corn, calling it "a danger to the environment."

The cultivation of all other GM crops is already banned in Germany. The variety in question, known as MON 810, produces a pesticide inside its tissues to repel insects such as larvae of the corn borer moth. Such corn is also known as Bt corn, after the Bacillus thuringiensis bacterium that the toxin-producing genes come from.

MON 810 was approved for cultivation by the European Union in 1998, but E.U. law allows individual countries to impose their own bans. Such bans have since been implemented by Austria, France, Greece, Hungary and Luxemburg. According to German Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner, Germany will now join their ranks.

The move was welcomed by environmental groups Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth Germany. Greenpeace spokesperson Stephanie Towe said that the decision is based on solid scientific evidence of environmental harm and should have been made long ago.

Critics say that GM crops can damage wildlife, spread their genetic material to wild relatives, and produce health problems in humans.

"As an example, it is now being discovered that pollen from genetically modified corn can kill monarch butterflies," writes Ron Garner in his book Conscious Health.

"There is long-term concern that pollen from bio-engineered crops will spread and kill beneficial insects as well as create strains of superweeds that are totally-resistant to pesticides," he writes. "Genetic engineering is changing the composition of foods, and most North American consumers are uninformed on the issue."

Biotechnology giant Monsanto, manufacturer of MON 810, condemned the new ban and said it is investigating the possibility of a lawsuit. Analysts warned that the environment ministry may have trouble proving to a court's satisfaction that the crop is harmful, potentially subjecting the government to millions of dollars in fines.

Vasectomy and thet risk for dementia

The dementia is Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), a neurological disease in which people have trouble recalling and understanding words. In PPA, people lose the ability to express themselves and understand speech. It differs from typical Alzheimer's disease in which a person's memory becomes impaired.

Sandra Weintraub, principal investigator and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and of neurology at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine, began investigating a possible link between the surgery and PPA when one of her male patients connected the onset of his language problem at age 43 to the period after his vasectomy.

At a twice-yearly Chicago support group for PPA patients Weintraub sees from around the country, the male patient rushed into the room and asked the men sitting there, "OK, guys, how many of you have PPA?" Nine hands went up.

"How many of you had a vasectomy?" he demanded next. Eight hands shot up.

Weintraub and her team of researchers surveyed 47 men with PPA who were being treated at Northwestern's Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center and 57 men with no cognitive impairment who were community volunteers. They ranged from 55 to 80 years old.

Of the non-impaired men, 16 percent had undergone a vasectomy. In contrast, 40 percent of the men with PPA had had the surgery.

"That's a huge difference," said Weintraub, director of neuropsychology in the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center. "It doesn't mean having a vasectomy will give you this disease, but it may be a risk factor to increase your chance of getting it."

In addition, the men who had undergone a vasectomy developed PPA at a younger age (58 years) than men with PPA who hadn't had one (62 years.)

While PPA robs people of their ability to speak and understand language, an unusual twist of the disease is patients are still able to maintain their hobbies and perform other complicated tasks for a number of years before other symptoms develop. Some people garden, build cabinets and even navigate a city subway system. By contrast, Alzheimer's patients lose interest in their hobbies, family life and may become idle. As PPA progresses over a number of years, however, patients eventually lose their ability to function independently.

Preliminary evidence from the study also seemed to connect another form of dementia to a vasectomy. In a smaller group of 30 men with a dementia called frontotemporal dementia (FTD,) 37 percent had undergone a vasectomy. The earliest symptoms of FTD are personality changes, lack of judgment and bizarre behavior. As in PPA, FTD usually starts at an earlier age, in the 40s and 50s.

One of Weintraub's patients with FTD was eating lunch in a restaurant with his family and excused himself to go to the bathroom. When he hadn't returned after 10 minutes, his sons went to investigate. They found him doing pushups on the bathroom floor. Other FTD patients begin shoplifting, compulsively gambling, misspending large amounts of money or become sexually demanding.

The most common form of dementia caused by brain deterioration in individuals over age 65 is Alzheimer's disease. Weintraub did not find an increased rate of vasectomy in patients with Alzheimer's.

Many patients with FTD and PPA share a common brain disease that is completely different from Alzheimer's. Whether a patient will get the behavioral or language problems depends on where the disease causes the most destruction in the brain. In FTD, most of the damage is in the frontal lobes; in PPA, it's in the language centers of the left hemisphere of the brain.

Weintraub theorizes a vasectomy may raise the risk of PPA (and possibly FTD) because the surgery breeches the protective barrier between the blood and the testes, called the blood-testis barrier.

Certain organs – including the testes and the brain – exist in what is the equivalent of a gated community in the body. Tiny tubes within the testes (in which sperm are produced) are protected by a physical barrier of Sertoli cells. The tight connections between these cells prevent blood-borne infections and poisonous molecules from entering the semen.

After a vasectomy, however, the protective barrier is broken and semen mixes into the blood. The immune system recognizes the sperm as invading foreign agents and produces anti-sperm antibodies in 60 to 70 percent of men.

Weintraub said these antibodies might cross the blood-brain-barrier and cause damage resulting in dementia. "There are other neurological models of disease which you can use as a parallel," Weintraub said. Certain malignant tumors produce antibodies that reach the brain and cause an illness similar to encephalitis, she noted.

The next step in Weintraub's research will be to launch a national study to see if her results will be confirmed in a larger population.

"I don't want to scare anyone away from getting a vasectomy," Weintraub stressed. "It's obviously a major birth control alternative. This is just a correlational observation," she said of the dementia connection. "We need to do more research to find out."

Ovarian cancer screenings are essentially useless

A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society (ACS) Cancer has found that current ovarian cancer screening technologies do virtually nothing to decrease the overall death rate from the disease. Laura Havrilesky, MD, MHSc, and her team from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, discovered that in many cases, ovarian cancer progresses so fast that screenings are unable to detect a problem until it is too late.

"If we assume ovarian cancers grow and spread at different rates, the best screening strategy available will only reduce the number of women dying from this cancer by 11 percent," Havrilesky is quoted as saying. "This is partially because the slower growing cancers are more likely to be caught by a screening test."

So the team has concluded that the best way to deal with ovarian cancer is to try harder to prevent it, and develop better methods of treating it. Because there is really one no way to determine the nature of ovarian cancer from patient to patient, there is also no single conventional method that effectively recognizes each unique type and its eventual progression rate.

Fortunately, there are many natural ways to fight ovarian cancer, and prevent it from occurring in the first place. The Agaricus Blazei Murrill mushroom (ABM mushroom), for instance, is a powerful cancer-fighting mushroom that studies out of both the U.K. and Japan have identified as such. The ABM mushroom contains high levels of powerful beta glucans that stimulate the immune system and promote the mechanisms that fight and prevent cancer cells from being able to take hold (http://www.naturalnews.com/025402_c...).

Other ovarian cancer fighters include bindweed (convolulus arvensis), selenium, turmeric (curcumin), vitamin K, quercetin, astragalus, espinheira santa, green tea and carotenoids.

Why some people refuse to shampoo their hair

Millions of people have been led to believe that, to clean their hair, they must use shampoo. In fact, mainstream media and big business will tell consumers how a particular shampoo can make a person's hair healthier, when nothing is further from the truth. Mainstream media also insists that a daily shampoo is safe, effective, and healthy. However, the truth is shampooing one's hair is damaging to one's mane and disrupts the body's natural processes. Using shampoo strips the hair of natural oils, exposes users to toxins, and promotes consumerism.

Before shampoo products were created, people used soap to clean their hair and scalp. It was easy to sell consumers on the idea of shampoo because soap often irritated eyes and left hair looking and feeling dull. Shampoo was marketed as an improved alternative. Shampoos, however, use detergents, among other things. Detergents are generally harsh and not only clean off unwanted dirt and skin flakes, but also strip hair of natural oils that actually keep hair soft, strong, and manageable. Today, people use conditioning products (full of more problematic ingredients) to replace the natural oils that have been shampooed off.

Not only are the detergents used in shampoos questionable and toxic, but there are also other dangerous ingredients and chemicals, items that the CDC and other health agencies warn are toxic. Some of these ingredients, according to numerous sources, include seemingly innocent-sounding items like Yellow 6, thought to be a carcinogen, and other less-recognizable things like "iodopropynyl butylcarbamate." Why would anyone want to pour a chemical lab on her head that is likely dangerous to her and the environment when she can use safer alternatives?

Finally, many people avoid shampooing their hair because--like many "needed" products today--it promotes rampant consumerism. If a person feels that shampoo is a necessity, he will buy it regularly. Many simple-living advocates avoid using commercial shampoos for that reason alone.

Refusing to shampoo doesn't mean people don't clean their hair, however. Most people who don't use shampoo instead rely on safe, enviro-friendly alternatives: they use baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice. Others use simply warm water and a brush. They do refuse the shampoo, and many are glad they do.

Obama's Evergreen Revolution a ploy to push GMOs

The Obama Administration is working towards a second "Green Revolution" in agriculture known as the "Evergreen Revolution". This sequel to prior agriculture industrialization efforts in India in the mid-20th century is being heralded by some as the next step in sustainable food production for the populations of the world. But a closer look reveals that one of the primary thrusts of the initiative is to push GMOs both in India and around the world.

In a recent Joint Session of the Indian Parliament, President Obama briefly explained his plans in the new Evergreen Revolution, which include exporting India's "hard-earned expertise" in agriculture, much of which was wrought during the first Green Revolution. But now, the goal is to allegedly improve upon these efforts and bring them to other developing areas like Africa that seem to be on the verge of an agricultural revolution.

But the main problem with the efforts is that they include exporting the same genetic modification technology that was thrust on India, but this time to the nations of Africa. In fact, a series of leaked reports from Wikileaks recently revealed that Africa is on the U.S. radar for GMO expansion efforts, which highlights the real agenda (http://www.naturalnews.com/030683_G...).

A recent Scientific American report on the subject explains that a former chief scientist from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is pushing the Obama Administration to focus heavily on GMOs in its efforts with the program. Gale Buchanan is a huge supporter of GMOs and is quoted as saying that the only way the Evergreen Revolution is going to have a "real, revolutionary" impact is if it makes GMOs its top priority. And since Buchanan has already expressed support for the initiative as it is, it is likely that GMOs are already part of the plan.

Walking beats cancer all by itself

Nearly 10,000 cancers could be prevented in the United Kingdom alone if people took several brisk walks per week, according to a report from the World Cancer Research Fund.

"You don't have to be an athlete to reduce your cancer risk," said Henry Scowcroft of Cancer Research UK. "There's solid evidence that certain cancers -- including breast and bowel cancer -- are less common in people who do regular, moderate exercise such as brisk walking."

The report found that an average of just 45 minutes of moderate exercise per day could prevent roughly 4,500 cases of bowel cancer in the United Kingdom each year. It could also prevent approximately 5,500 cases of breast cancer, or more than 10 percent.

Moderate exercise includes brisk walks, cycling, dancing, gardening, leisurely swimming, or housework including vacuuming.

The report's authors point out that it is the total amount of time spent exercising that matters, not the length of any given session. In other words, taking three brisk 10-minute walks during the day provides as much benefit as taking one half-hour walk.

"These figures also show you do not have to go to the gym every day to benefit," researcher Rachel Thompson said. "You can reduce your cancer risk just by making small changes and this is highlighted by the fact that so many cancer cases could be prevented through something as simple as brisk walking. By taking up walking as a hobby or even walking to the shops instead of taking the bus or car, people can make a real difference to their health."

Researchers have long known that regular exercise reduces the risk of cancer.

"This hardly comes as a surprise, since cancer cells are typically oxygen-deprived, and exercise is a direct way to deliver extra oxygen to cells throughout the body and to improve the immune response," writes Andreas Moritz in the book Cancer Is Not A Disease.

"Researchers also believe that exercise can regulate the production of certain hormones that, unregulated, may spur tumor growth."
