Avocadoes contain many health benefits
What folk medicine has to say:
Avocados can aid in the treatment of some dermatologic conditions. In folk medicine, raw mashed avocado has been used for the treatment of psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. Avocado oils have been used topically to treat wounds, infections and stimulate hair growth. They have a softening and soothing nature and can be used in face masks. They have a high absorption rate into the skin. This allows them to aid in driving other constituents into the skin as well.
Avocados can also help with systemic disharmonies. The seeds, leaves and bark have been used for dysentery and diarrhea. They can also aid in reproductive issues, stimulating menstrual flow and relieving PMS. Plus, they are an aphrodisiac!
What science has to say:
Cholesterol: The monounsaturated fatty acids in avocados can improve total cholesterol. Total cholesterol combines HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein). HDL is considered "good" cholesterol and is increased by monounsaturated fatty acids, like those found in avocados. In a study from Mexico, the intake of avocado was linked to a significant decrease of serum total cholesterol (17%), LDL-cholesterol (22%) and triglycerides (22%) and to an increase of HDL-cholesterol (11%). This study exemplifies the ideal result in high cholesterol management; not only did the total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides go down, but the "good" HDL also went up.
Numerous Cancer Fighting Constituents: Avocados are rich in antioxidants, lutein, carotenoids (eaxanthin, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene), and Vitamin E (tocopherols). A 2005 in vitro study showed avocado extracts containing these carotenoids and tocopherols inhibit the growth of both androgen-dependent (LNCaP) and androgen-independent (PC-3) prostate cancer cell lines. This means they could potentially aid in the prevention or treatment of prostate cancer. Avocados are also a rich source of beta-sitosterol, which is believed to have both cholesterol lowering and anticancer effects.
Osteoarthritis Treatment: Avocados have unsaponifiables, which are also found in soybeans. In vitro, these unsaponifiables can reduce cytokines, prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators. Inflammation is the body's response to a threat and is a good thing when needed, but hypersensitivities and chronic inflammation can lead to debilitating conditions like arthritis. By stopping the inflammation response, it can improve these symptoms.
So next time you're munching down on guacamole, have an extra scoop!

Tea consumption slows cognitive decline in older adults
"In recent years, a body of scientific evidence has shown that regular tea drinking may have an important role in health and wellness," says Douglas Balentine of the Lipton Institute of Tea, which funded the study. "This new study provides further support that regular tea drinking may be an important actionable change a consumer can make as part of a healthy lifestyle."
The researchers followed more 4,800 U.S. residents over the age of 64 for up to 14 years, regularly assessing tea consumption and coffee consumption using food frequency questionnaires and assessing cognitive performance with the Mini-Mental State Examination. After adjusting for potential confounding factors such as age, education, medical history and smoking status, the researchers found that tea drinking was associated with 17 to 37 percent less cognitive decline over time.
Compared with participants who never drank tea, those who drank tea only five to 10 times per year experienced 17 percent less cognitive decline. Cognitive decline was 26 percent lower in those who drank tea five or more times per week, 32 percent lower in those who drank it one to three times per month, and 37 percent lower in those who drank it one to four times per week. Coffee consumption, in contrast, had no effect on cognitive decline except among those who drank it five or more times per week; in this group, cognitive decline was decreased by 20 percent.
A full 25 percent of participants reported drinking tea daily, while 43 percent drank coffee every day.
"This study suggests a potential neuroprotective effect of tea consumption against cognitive decline," lead researcher Lenore Arab said. "This neuroprotective effect of tea is unlikely related to caffeine since coffee, which has two to three times more caffeine than tea, did not have the same effect."

Common chemicals causing sex changes in animals
Researchers from the Universities of Exeter and Brunel recently completed a four-year study on how EDCs affect ecosystems, and their findings are quite disturbing. EDCs often bear the nickname "gender benders" because they compromise the hormonal balance of living creatures, causing them to undergo sexual changes.
The authors say the study is the first of its kind to identify the long-term impact of EDCs on wild fish. Using a genetic identification technique that analyzes DNA microsatellites, scientists observed that intersex fish -- meaning those whose sexuality was compromised by EDCs and who harbor both male sperm and female eggs -- have a 76 percent reduced reproductive capacity due to the chemical interactions.
"This is the first time we've seen firm evidence that the intersex fish, males that have been feminized by EDCs, have a reduced ability to breed," explained Professor Charles Tyler, a joint researcher from the University of Exeter's Biosciences department. "Clearly this raises concerns about the implications on the future for wild fish populations...but there's also much wider issues raised by these findings. Some of the effects seen in fish could occur in other animals, too, as hormone systems are quite similar across vertebrates."
NaturalNews covered a similar story back in September about how EDCs are turning male fish into female fish (http://www.naturalnews.com/029717_c...). And a report back from March revealed how the same chemicals are feminizing human boys (http://www.naturalnews.com/028368_f...).

Taking prescription drugs could cost you your job
According to a recent report in The Seattle Times, Sue Bates had legally been prescribed hydrocodone by her doctor. But Dura Automotive Systems, her employer, had also recently changed its drug testing policy to include performance-altering pharmaceuticals like hydrocodone, citing the fact that such medications are a safety hazard. And since Bates tested positive, she was terminated.
According to Quest Diagnostics, a company that provides workplace drug tests, the number of employees who test positive for prescription opiate drugs increased by 40 percent between 2005 and 2009. Just last year, this percentage jumped 18 percent. And data from over 500,000 drug tests revealed that workers tested for drugs after they had had accidents on the job were four times as likely to test positive for opiates than workers tested before being hired.
"It's not nearly on employer radar screens as much as it should be," said Mark de Bernardo, executive director of the Institute for a Drug-Free Workplace, a nonprofit business coalition. "Given the liability for industrial accidents or product defects or workplace injuries involving prescription-drug abuse, employers cannot afford not to address this issue."
But Bates disagrees, citing the fact that she merely listened to her doctor's recommendations and did not commit any crimes. "If the medicine [we're] taking is not good for [us] or the workplace, then there should be some sort of program where they can teach us how that affects [us] or see if something else can be worked out," she said.

British prawns getting high on Prozac in the water
In recent years, scientists have become increasingly aware that pharmaceutical products and byproducts are contaminating the world's fresh- and saltwater. These come from products washed off human bodies and clothing, partially metabolized drugs given to humans and animals, and unmetabolized drugs discarded from hospitals and pharmaceutical plants.
"It's no surprise that what we get from the pharmacy will be contaminating the waterways," researcher Alex Ford said.
Water treatment plants are unable to prevent this kind of pollution.
"Drugs are partially broken down in the treatment process but what we are realizing now is that a lot more gets through than we thought," Ford said. "The treatment plants weren't designed to break down medicines so some inevitably get concentrated [and] released into streams or onto beaches. Effluent is concentrated in river estuaries and coastal areas, which is where shrimps and other marine life live - this means that shrimps are taking on the excreted drugs of whole towns."
To test the possible effects of this pollution, Ford and colleagues exposed prawns to the same levels of Prozac found in British wastewater. They found that the animals, which normally prefer hiding in dark places, became five times more likely to swim up toward light after drug exposure -- thereby placing them at increased risk of being eaten by predators.
"Crustaceans are crucial to the food chain," Ford said. "If behavior is being changed this could seriously upset the balance of the ecosystem."
The researchers believe that, as in humans, Prozac is likely affecting the levels of serotonin in the brains of aquatic animals. The effects of other drugs -- such as hormones, cholesterol drugs and antibiotics -- remains unknown, as does the effect of drugs in combination.

Big Pharma trying to convince women they female Viagra
"This is really a classic case of disease branding," said Adriane Fugh-Berman of Georgetown University, who studies drug marketing. "The messages are aimed at medicalizing normal conditions, and also preying on the insecurity of both the clinician and the patient."
Fugh-Berman's comments refer to a major ad campaign by drug company Boehringer Ingelheim, which is seeking FDA approval for a drug to treat low female libido. If approved, the daily pill would be the first drug in the United States designed to treat low sexual desire in premenopausal women.
An FDA staff report and advisory panel have both advised against approving the drug, concluding that the company has not proved its effectiveness. Although the FDA is not required to follow such recommendations, it usually does.
Boehringer Ingelheim's ad campaign has included a Web site, Twitter feed, Discovery Channel documentary and speaking tour by actress and former Playboy model Lisa Rinna. The company has also sponsored "educational" classes about the condition for medical professionals.
But experts warn that while many women may occasionally suffer from periods of low libido, this may not be a medical condition that should be treated with drugs. They point out that studies alleging high rates of "female sexual dysfunction" (such as one in 10 women) have been funded by drug companies.
New York University researcher Leonore Tiefer, who studies female sexual desire, warned that if such drugs are approved, "the much larger group of women without any medical reason for their sexual distress will inevitably be misinformed and misled into thinking that there is a pill that can get them the sex life they read about, the one they think everyone else is having."

Selenium: Find Health with the Mercury Magnet
Many people have very high levels of mercury in their body. Mercury attaches and competes for cellular binding sites with other major trace minerals. When we are trace mineral deficient mercury is able to infiltrate and contaminate cells by shutting down their energy producing and anti-oxidant enzyme systems.
The major sources of mercury come from dental amalgam fillings, processed foods, vaccines, fish, & industrial pollution. According to a large study published in the Journal of Environmental Health in 2009, mercury cell chloralkali chemicals are used to manufacture color additives such as FD&C Yellow 5 and FD&C Yellow 6 and high fructose corn syrup.
Selenium is a trace mineral that incorporates itself into proteins to produce selenoprotein enzymes. These enzymes act as an anti-oxidant in the body to destroy free radicals and boost both the immune system and thyroid function. Mercury binds with selenium and reduces selenoprotein production. This deficiency hampers immune & thyroid function.
Selenium acts as a mercury magnet with a very strong binding affinity for the toxic substance. This strong attraction allows selenium to mix and neutralize their reaction characteristics. This new Hg - Se substance that is produced is not absorbed by the body and gets flushed out of the system. This is a very beneficial interaction that removes mercury from the body before it can lodge in fatty tissue and cause damage.
It is critical that we maintain a surplus of selenium in our body to effectively neutralize mercury and produce the anti-oxidant enzymes that benefit us so much. We must consume less mercury and more selenium in order for this to happen. If we have increased mercury consumption (dental amalgams, vaccines, processed food consumption), then we will need increased selenium consumption of up to 1000 mg/daily.
We should normally consume between 200-400 micrograms of selenium daily. Too much selenium is toxic; however, the average American consumes just 60 mg daily. This creates a deficiency that leads to lowered immunity and increased risk of disease. The most common disorders associated with selenium deficiencies include cancer, fatigue, stunted growth, high cholesterol and liver & pancreatic disorders.
Fish consumption has been a source of controversy due to the elevating mercury levels from industrial pollution. However, fish is also a great source of selenium. The key is to use fish sources that are minimally processed and contain significantly more selenium than mercury.
Dr. Nicholas Ralston's report to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that (southern) Flounder, Tuna, and Wild Pacific Salmon (including Chinook, Sockeye and Coho) have much more Selenium than Mercury. Pilot Whale, Tarpon and most types of Shark were shown to be the most hazardous.
Reduce Mercury & Boost Selenium Naturally:
1.Minimize processed food consumption.
2.Avoid vaccines & choose natural means to boost immunity
3.Do not get dental amalgams put in and look to remove existing ones by finding an IAOMT mercury-free dentist: http://www.iaomt.org/patients/searc...
4.Brazil nuts are the greatest source of selenium. A handful (depending on soil quality) contains anywhere from 200 - 550 mg. Eat 5-10 brazil nuts daily.
5.Only eat fish with very high selenium:mercury ratios: http://www.mercuryfacts.org/fseleni...
6.Use cilantro (a heavy metal chelating agent) in your fish and other foods
7.Supplement with cracked-wall chlorella (heavy metal chelating agent).

ADA study confirms dangers of fluoridated water, especially for babies
When people are exposed to excessive levels of fluoride through sources like drinking water, foods and beverages and even swallowed toothpaste, it often results in a condition known as dental fluorosis. The internal uptake of fluoride into teeth over time causes their enamel to become mottled and discolored, the end result being damaged teeth that have essentially rotted from the inside out.
Dr. Steven Levy, D.D.S., and his team found during their study that "fluoride intakes during each of the first four years (of a child's life) were individually significantly related to fluorosis on maxillary central incisors, with the first year more important." They went on to warn that "infant formulas reconstituted with higher fluoride water can provide 100 to 200 times more fluoride than breast milk, or cow's milk."
In other words, young children have the highest risk of severe tooth damage from fluoride, especially those that are six months of age or younger, a time during which children's blood-brain barriers have not fully formed. Even low ingestion levels cause the direct depositing of fluoride into the teeth, brain and other bodily tissues and organs which, besides causing fluorosis, also causes disorders of the brain and nervous system, kidneys and bones.
And the American Dental Association (ADA) has known that fluoride exposure causes dental fluorosis since at least 2006, but the group has done nothing to warn the 200 million Americans that live in communities with fluoridated water to avoid its use in babies and infants. Many dentists still recommend that children and adults not only drink fluoridated water, but even advise parents to add fluoride drops to their children's drinking water if the family lives in unfluoridated areas or drinks private well water.
Fluoride causes serious health problems
In 2006, a study published in The Lancet identified fluoride as "an emerging neurotoxic substance" that causes severe brain damage. The National Research Council (NRC) wrote that "it is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain and the body by direct and indirect means."About a month later, another study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found a definitive link between fluoride intake and reduce IQ levels, indicating once again that fluoride intake causes cognitive damage.
At Harvard University, researchers identified a link between fluoride and bone cancer. Published 14 years after it began, the study found that the highest rates of osteosarcoma, a fatal form of bone cancer, were occurring most in populations drinking fluoridated water. The findings confirmed those of a prior government study back in 1990 that involved fluoride-treated rats.
Kidney disease is another hallmark of fluoride poisoning. Multiple animal studies have found that fluoride levels as low as 1 part per million (ppm) -- which is the amount added to most fluoridated water systems -- cause kidney damage. And a Chinese study found that children exposed to slightly higher fluoride levels had biological markers in their blood indicative of kidney damage.
The NRC has also found that fluoride impairs proper thyroid function and debilitates the endocrine system. Up until the 1970s, fluoride was used in Europe as a thyroid-suppressing medication because it lowers thyroid function. Many experts believe that widespread hypothyroidism today is a result of overexposure to fluoride.
Since fluoride is present in most municipal water supplies in North America, it is absurd to even suggest that parents avoid giving it to their young children. How are parents supposed to avoid it unless they install a whole-house reverse osmosis water filtration system? And even if families install such a system, fluoride is found in all sorts of food and beverages, not to mention that it is absorbed through the skin every time people wash their hands with or take a shower in fluoridated water. Perhaps these are some of the reasons why the ADA has said nothing about the issue despite the findings.
There simply is no legitimate reason to fluoridate water. Doing so forcibly medicates an entire population with a carcinogenic, chemical drug. There really is no effective way to avoid it entirely, and nobody really knows how much is ingested or absorbed on a daily basis because exposure is too widespread to calculate. But political pressure and bad science have continued to justify water fluoridation in most major cities, despite growing mountains of evidence showing its dangers.
Ending water fluoridation is a difficult task, but concerted efforts by citizens, local authorities, and even dentists, have resulted in some significant victories. To learn more about fluoride, check out the Fluoride Action Network (FAN):

Pharmacist denies inhaler to woman
"I had exactly a twenty-dollar bill. It came to twenty-one and change," Jack said to Fox 5. "I offered him my cell phone, my wallet. I said I live right around the corner. I come in here all the time."
But the pharmacist would not comply, said Jack. The couple ended up leaving the store empty-handed, Katherine still having an attack. Jack ended up calling a paramedic friend who was able to arrive quickly and treat Katherine. She recovered, but the couple is shocked at the way they were treated by the pharmacist.
When asked about the situation, the CVS store manager allegedly had no comment. The CVS corporate office, however, responded with a statement saying that "[t]he well-being of our customers is our highest priority and we are looking into this matter."
CVS was recently implicated in a government lawsuit for illegally selling over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to criminals who used them to make methamphetamines. The pharmacy chain pleaded guilty to the charges, agreeing to pay a $75 million civil penalty and forfeit $2.6 million in profits from the drugs. kids drinking lead
The nonprofit Environmental Law Foundation used previously published studies to evaluate which kinds of food products were most likely to contain lead, then used an Environmental Protection Agency-certified lab to test 146 products from these categories that are specifically marketed for children. In addition to juices, products tested included fruit cocktail mixes, packaged peaches and pears, and baby food.
A full 125 of the products tested -- more than 85 percent -- contained more than the 0.5 microgram threshold beyond which Prop. 65 requires a "clear and reasonable" warning on the packaging.
The FDA classifies lead exposures up to 6 micrograms per day as tolerable, but the American Academy of Pediatrics has warned that no "safe level" of lead exposure exists, in part because the heavy metal accumulates in the body over the course of a lifetime.
"Lead exposure among children is a particular concern because their developing bodies absorb lead at a higher rate and because children are particularly sensitive to lead's toxic effects, including decreased I.Q.," said Dr. Barbara G. Callahan of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
Lead damages the central nervous system, including the brain, and can produce anemia, behavioral problems, learning disabilities and hearing loss.
The products found to be contaminated included Earth's Best Organics Apple Juice, Trader Joe's Certified Organic Apple Juice (pasteurized), Del Monte 100% Juice Fruit Cocktail, Safeway Diced Peaches in Light Syrup, and S&W Sun Pears Premium. A full list is available at http://www.envirolaw.org/documents/....
The Environmental Law Foundation has sent a letter to the producers of the contaminated products, as well as to California law enforcement, asking for compliance with Prop. 65.

Ben & Jerry's dropping 'All Natural' label | GMO ingredients
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has been calling out Ben & Jerry's for what it says is deceptive labeling since 2002, citing the fact that ingredients like alkalized cocoa and partially hydrogenated soybean oil -- two ingredients found in many varieties of Ben & Jerry's ice cream -- are not natural.
"[T]hese ingredients come from the factory, not the farm," Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of CSPI, is cited as saying in an earlier NaturalNews.com report.
http://www.naturalnews.com/029520_n...
In response, Unilever finally caved and did the right thing by dropping the label from its products. However a recent company press release indicates that Unilever still believes its Ben & Jerry's products are natural, and that those who disagree are being unreasonable.
"Ben & Jerry's has based its use of the term "all natural" on guidelines issued by the FDA, which reflect how reasonable consumers would understand that term," the release states.
So according to Ben & Jerry's, oil extracted from genetically-modified soybeans using chemical hexane, and that has been artificially processed into a solid-state trans-fat, is an ingredient that reasonable consumers -- and the FDA -- consider natural.
Any reasonable scientist, however, is sure to disagree, as is anyone else with the least bit of common sense.

New FDA regulations to destroy small organic farms
"How do we trust that the FDA is going to know about things that the San Francisco Bay Area has been very progressive on -- the field to fork, fresh, grow local, buy local -- all of that?" said Rep. Sam Farr. "The organic people are feeling that the regulations the FDA may promulgate will be so safety oriented, it'll put them out of business."
Spurred by recent outbreaks of foodborne illness across the country, Congress has moved to give the FDA direct control over the production, storage, transport, inspection and recall of food products. A bill to that effect has already passed the House of Representatives, while another version is currently before the Senate.
Yet small farmers object that even the more lenient Senate version would be an undue burden on their operations. They are backed up by a recent study from the University of California-Davis, which concluded that new food safety rules consistently impose higher per-acre costs on small farmers.
The farmers also argue that food contamination has not come from diverse, small-scale farms, but from big monoculture fields, from animal agriculture and from newer products such as pre-bagged vegetables, in which crops from a variety of farms are mixed, bagged and shipped over long distances.
"[The legislation] does not take on the industrial animal industry and the abuses going on," said California organic farmer Tom Willey. "The really dangerous organisms we're dealing with out here, and trying to protect our produce and other foodstuffs from, are coming out the rear end of domestic animals."
The first food poisoning outbreak in what would originally become a nationwide problem has been attributed to a strain of E. coli that first appeared in hamburger meat in the 1980s, and had spread to spinach by 2006.

GM corn is destroying US rivers
More than 85 percent of the U.S. corn crop in 2009 was GM. This GM corn contains a gene called Bacillus thuriengensis (Bt) that has been injected into it to repels pests like the corn borer beetle. Each kernel of corn literally grows a pesticide protein inside it called Cry1Ab that deters and kill pests.
Besides the fact that eating such corn is obviously toxic, the residue of this built-in pesticide also ends up covering large swaths of U.S. farmland. After the corn is harvested, husks, stalks and other residue doused and bred with pesticides end up getting carried away by rain, snow and other environmental factors into nearby rivers and streams
"Our research adds to the growing body of evidence that corn crop byproducts can be dispersed throughout a stream network, and that the compounds associated with genetically modified crops, such as insecticidal proteins, can enter nearby water bodies," Rosi-Marshall is quoted as saying in a recent article in The Independent.
Tests revealed that every stream with detectable levels of GM pesticides was located within roughly 1,600 feet of a GM corn field. And roughly 90 percent of the streams and rivers in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana -- three states that grow large amounts of GM crops -- are located within this distance, indicating a serious problem.
"The tight linkage between corn fields and streams warrants further research into how corn byproducts, including Cry1Ab insecticidal proteins, potentially impact non-target ecosystems, such as streams and wetlands," said Dr. Rosi-Marshall.

Alex Jones Moneybomb| Infowars | Prision Plant | The fight is NOW
On Thursday, October 14, Alex will be on the air for 24 hours as part of the effort to raise the money required to keep the Infowars operation up and running. The last moneybomb was held three years ago. However, since that time, the economy has grown worse, thanks primarily to the concerted efforts of the globalist ruling class. Over the last three years, Alex’s audience has tripled and yet the amount of money coming to fund the operation has remained the same.
Unlike the corporate media, the Infowars operation is not lavishly funded by mega-corporations owned by international bankers. Because of this, we are dependent on the generosity of supporters to fund our growing operation.
In addition to more feature length DVDs, we will launch a new social network, Planet Infowars. We will feature two new TV shows, a daily version for for Prisonplanet.tv subscribers, and a new show that will broadcast on satellite television.
Beginning at 11:00 am CST on Thursday, Alex will present for free streamed over the internet a large number of previously unreleased videos. Interviews with Paul Craig Roberts, Katherine Austin Fitts, Lord Christopher Monckton, Sherri Tenpenny, Jeffrey Smith, Rev. Clenard Childress, Alan Watt, and dozens of others will be aired. Streaming this new content will cost us tens of thousands of dollars over a 24 hour period. In addition, the marathon show will feature a number of live guests, including Max Keiser, Gerald Celente, Webster Tarpley, and Paul Craig Roberts.

Food Addictions Come with the Standard American Diet
Just a little research on the topic will lead readers to discover that withdrawal from food addictions can result in many of the same symptoms drug addicts suffer when they withdraw, suffering from symptoms like headaches, sweating, chills, and depression, among others.
Foods that People Might Find Themselves Addicted To
Caffeine: Most people have heard and know that caffeine can be addictive. Caffeine is a mild stimulant that can be found in a variety of foods, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and - of course - soft drinks with added caffeine. While there is still much debate as to whether caffeine is good or bad, many people would agree that any substance that causes addiction is not good.
Sugar: Few people would argue today that sugar is a good additive to have in food. Not only is sugar highly addictive, but it also has been proven to be bad for one's health. Sugar, in its many forms, can lead to many diseases, the most well-known being Type 2 Diabetes.
Salt: Salt is added abundantly to many processed foods and so it is easy to become addicting. Most Americans eat far more salt than is necessary and, like other foods, they can become addicted to it, craving more and more as time goes on.
Fat: One now-famous study published in Nature Neuroscience in March 2010 demonstrated that rats who became addicted to high-fat foods experienced withdrawal symptoms similar to those experienced by drug users, and they found it difficult to quit the fat. Fatty foods can be addictive to people as well.
Casein: Casein is a protein found in cow's milk and consequently cheese and other dairy products. Casein, according to Dr. Neil D. Barnard, breaks down during digestion into casomorphins, which are opiates that work just like any other opiate. They make the eater feel good during and after eating, create cravings, and cause withdrawal when the eater gives them up. Barnard states that casein is more concentrated in cheese than in milk.
So how does a person avoid becoming a food addict? Barnard, like other experts, recommends a low-fat vegan diet, which avoids many of these addictive foods; avoiding processed foods, which are known for being heavily-laden with salt, sugar, and fat, will also help people avoid the worst of these foods. People don't want to be slaves to their food; food should nourish, satisfy, and fuel a body, not make it go through withdrawal symptoms when people can't get their lunch fix right away.
[Editor`s Note: NaturalNews is strongly against the use of all forms of animal testing. We fully support implementation of humane medical experimentation that promotes the health and wellbeing of all living creatures.]

Monsanto, DuPont compete for dominance of GMO
The approved crop is a soybean engineered to be especially high in oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat. The high-oleic soy had been pending deregulation since 2006, and is now cleared for commercial use. The company still intends to carry out further commercial testing before introducing the crop to the global market in 2012.
Also pending approval are two new GM soy varieties engineered by Monsanto, one to produce higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and one to produce oils with a longer shelf life. These latter oils are intended as a low-cost replacement for hydrogenated oils (trans fats), which are being widely phased out due to their proven contribution to heart disease and death.
The U.S. food industry currently purchases six billion pounds of soy oil each year, nearly all of it hydrogenated. Monsanto is hoping that the new GM variety will be appealing to farmers hoping to stem widespread profit loss due to the move away from trans fats.
With 90 percent of the U.S. soybean crop already coming from GM seeds, the approval of the new varieties is likely to touch off a major turf war between DuPont and Monsanto, with both companies trying to grab as large a share as possible of the lucrative market.
The new soy crops stand to become the first commercialized biotech crops engineered for a quality other than pest or herbicide resistance. They were all engineered by silencing the activity of genes in their fatty acid pathways, in contrast to the more widespread method of inserting new DNA from bacterial genes.
The approval of a GM crop engineered for nutritional purposes is expected to usher in a new wave of such products. Whether U.S. consumers are comfortable enough with biotechnology to willingly purchase such products remains to be seen.

Breaking News | Government Seize private pensions
Public pension plans have been so aggressively looted already by the government that cities and counties face a $574 billion funding gap, according to a CNBC report.
That black hole is set to be filled by a new proposal that will “fairly” distribute taxpayer-funded pensions to everyone, by confiscating the private wealth of millions of Americans. Its proponents express staggering arrogance in thinking that they can just steal money people have worked for decades to accrue as if it’s their own.
Not only would the government confiscate 401(k) pensions, it would also impose a mandatory 5 per cent payroll tax payable by everyone, according to a hearing chaired last week by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee.
“This would, of course, be a sister government ponzi scheme working in tandem with Social Security, the primary purpose being to give big government politicians additional taxpayer funds to raid to pay for their out-of-control spending,” writes Connie Hair.
The hearing was a platform for advocates of Guaranteed Retirement Accounts (GRAs), a program authored by Teresa Ghilarducci, professor of economic policy analysis at the New School for Social Research in New York. Back in November 2008, Ghilarducci testified to Congress that 401(k)s and IRAs should be confiscated and converted into universal Guaranteed Retirement Accounts (GRAs) managed by the Social Security Administration.
“You don’t hold hearings on something you don’t intend to do,” points out the Market Ticker blog. “I hate it when I’m right. I hate it even more when tens of millions of Americans are going to get reamed to pay for the crimes of the handful on Wall Street, and their crony enablers in Washington DC.”
The GRAs would be enforced by means of a mandatory savings tax equating to 5 per cent of an individual’s annual paycheck deposited to the GRA. Social Security and Medicare taxes would still be payable, employers would no longer would be able to write off their contributions and capital gains would be taxable year-on-year. In addition, workers could bequeath only half of their account balances to their heirs, unlike full balances from existing 401(k) and IRA accounts.
During a Seattle radio interview in October 2008, Ghilarducci explained the motive behind the plan, stating, “I’m just rearranging the tax breaks that are available now for 401(k)s and spreading – spreading the wealth” (emphasis mine).
However, as we painfully learned in the immediate aftermath of the original $700 million dollar bailout, which was originally sold on the basis that it would be used to pay off bad debt, governments that propose “spreading the wealth” under socialist-style financial reforms almost always collect the wealth under the pretext of being the saviors before greedily hoarding it all for themselves.
The GRA program is being pushed by the Economic Policy Institute, an organization housed on the third floor of the building occupied by the George Soros-funded Center for American Progress. The Center for American Progress is a think tank headed by Bill Clinton’s former chief of staff John D. Podesta, who was also head of Barack Obama’s presidential transition team after the 2008 election.
In preparing to seize private pensions, the United States is going the same way as Argentinean government, which in 2008 nationalized the country’s private pension plans, known as AFJPs, confiscating the wealth of millions.
“We have no doubt that here the right to private property is being violated. Not just for us but for society and the world, this is a clear confiscation,” said opposition Radical Party’s Ernesto Sanz at the time.
How will Americans react to having not only their wealth but their nest egg for future generations brazenly confiscated by the government in one fell swoop? If this doesn’t prompt widespread rioting and civil disobedience in America on behalf of the besieged middle class then nothing will.
Fresh food that lasts from eFoods Direct (Ad)
Don’t be under any illusions, if you don’t have a private pension and think this won’t affect you – think again. Once the pretext has been created that the state can simply confiscate privately earned wealth, they can then come after anything, your gold, your home, your kids and eventually your very freedom. Once the vampire of big government gets a taste for blood, the teeth will only sink in further, and America’s resemblance to third world tyrannies will rapidly accelerate.

Food firms spend millions to block food health warning labels
Under the proposed "traffic light" plan, which has already been adopted by some European supermarkets, foods would be marked with a series of prominent green, yellow or red circles representing different key nutrients. A red light would mean that the product should be consumed only occasionally, a yellow light would mean the product could safely be consumed in moderation, and a green light would mean the product was good to consume in quantity.
Concerned that such a plan would turn consumers away from sugary drinks, salty snacks and other foods labeled with a number of "red lights," the food industry poured €1 billion ($1.2 billion) into lobbying the European Parliament to reject the scheme.
Food industry lobbying had previously convinced the parliament's environment committee to reject the plan, by a 32-30 vote.
The traffic light plan would be an important contribution to efforts to reign in obesity, said Monique Goyens of the consumer group BEUC.
"Consumers have a right to clear and easy-to-understand information on packaging," Goyens said. "At a time when one in five Europeans are obese, there should be no reason not to empower individuals to improve their diets if they so wish."
But instead, the parliament adopted an industry-backed plan that will put calorie, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugar and salt content on the front label of foods, with reference to the daily recommended intake per 100 milliliters or 100 grams.
Supporters of the traffic light plan -- who include medical associations, anti-obesity advocates, consumer groups, and a majority of British shoppers -- expressed anger at the decision.
"They prefer complex labels that make it far harder for shoppers to really understand what's going in their basket," said British MEP Glenis Willmott.

Food prices to rise globally as energy prices edge higher
Higher prices of crude oil are set to increase food prices, particularly in countries that import large amounts of food or those, such as the United States, that rely heavily on petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides. In addition, increasing affluence and the adoption of a Western diet in Third World countries is expected to turn more land toward cultivation of animal feed and away from cultivation of staples.
"As incomes rise, diets are expected to slowly diversify away from staple foods towards increased meats and processed foods," the report reads.
Grain prices are now projected to rise 15 to 40 percent relative to the 1997-2006 average, in comparison with last year's forecast of only a 10 to 20 percent increase. The price of vegetable oils is forecast to rise 40 percent, in contrast to last year's forecast of 30 percent. And while last year's report actually predicted a drop in meat and dairy prices, the new report has reversed that projection and anticipates a price increase.
All projected price increases are adjusted for inflation.
Although prices are expected to continue climbing, the report says they will probably not reach the same levels as during the food crisis of 2008, which sparked riots around the world. Nonetheless, it says, "further episodes of strong price fluctuations ... cannot be ruled out, nor can future short-lived crises."
The report further warned that rising prices may lead food-importing nations such as South Korea and Saudi Arabia to feel "strategically vulnerable," leading to a "race for [food] self-sufficiency." Such anxiety has already led to land grabs in poorer countries, contributing to riots and civil unrest in those nations.

Buy alcohol for breast cancer!
Earlier in the year, NaturalNews broke the story on Kentucky Fried Chicken's (KFC) outrageous "Buckets for the Cure" campaign that claimed it would help end cancer forever, even though KFC chicken is filled with toxic chemical additives that contribute to causing cancer. You can read more about that here:
http://www.naturalnews.com/028631_K...
But now we have alcoholic beverage companies blanketing their products in pink and marketing them as helping a good cause. Chambord's "Pink Your Drink" campaign, for instance, urges customers to buy the liquor because "by adding a splash of Chambord to any cocktail, you're supporting breast cancer awareness year-round."
Despite lofty donations from such companies towards the cause, many critics say that raising money for breast cancer research by selling products that cause cancer is hypocritical and irresponsible. The next thing you know, cigarette companies will be selling pink cigarettes labeled "Smoke for the Cure".
"Anybody trying to sell alcohol to promote breast cancer awareness should be ashamed of themselves," said Barbara Brenner, executive director of Breast Cancer Action, in a recent USA Today story.
While the companies selling the pink alcohol products insist they are doing it to help a good cause, many believe that cause-related marketing is really about selling more products. However, many charities, including those that raise awareness about breast cancer, continue to accept donations from such companies.

Monsanto's super GMO corn fails
Until recently, Monsanto's stock value had been steadily rising since 2008, but as its new GMO varieties have failed to live up to expectations, share prices and profits have been plummeting. SmartStax corn, which is far more expensive than previous GMO varieties, has failed to achieved desired yields, as has the company's newer variety of GMO soybeans. Both failures have led not only to major price reductions for seeds, but also far less overall sales by farmers.
Monsanto's strategy has been to continually insert increasing amounts of new genes into seeds to make them perform better, and subsequently increase prices for farmers. But that predatory strategy has failed, as farmers are less willing these days to buy such seeds, especially at premium prices. And many farmers simply no longer trust Monsanto.
Sales of Monsanto's RoundUp formula have also plummeted, due in part to the fact that cheaper generics have started to penetrate the market, and because the formula simply is not working like it used to. New RoundUp-resistant "superweeds" are emerging that have rendered the product largely useless.
You can find out more about Monsanto by visiting: http://www.naturalnews.com/Monsanto...
Unfortunately, Monsanto is not the only player in the GMO game. And rather than regress back to non-GMO seeds, some farmers are simply purchasing GMO seeds from other companies like DuPont that have seen their market share grow as Monsanto's has decreased. But as the public wakes up to the truth about the dangers of GMOs, perhaps the entire GMO industry will eventually wither and die, much like the weeds and pests that it claims to eliminate.

Breaking News | government licensing internet
Speaking to the ISSE 2010 computer security conference in Berlin yesterday, Scott Charney, Microsoft vice president of Trustworthy Computing, said that cybersecurity should mirror public health safety laws, with infected PC’s being “quarantined” by government decree and prevented from accessing the Internet.
“If a device is known to be a danger to the internet, the user should be notified and the device should be cleaned before it is allowed unfettered access to the internet, minimizing the risk of the infected device contaminating other devices,” Charney said.
Charney said the system would be a “global collective defense” run by corporations and government and would “track and control” people’s computers similar to how government health bodies track diseases.
Invoking the threat of malware attacks as a means of dissuading or blocking people from using the Internet is becoming a common theme – but it’s one tainted with political overtones.
At the launch of the Obama administration’s cybersecurity agenda earlier this year, Democrats attempted to claim that the independent news website The Drudge Report was serving malware, an incident Senator Jim Inhofe described as a deliberate ploy “to discourage people from using Drudge”.
Under the new proposals, not only would the government cite the threat of malware to prevent people from visiting Drudge, they would be blocked from the entire world wide web, creating a dangerous precedent by giving government the power to dictate whether people can use the Internet and effectively opening the door for a licensing system to be introduced.
Similar to how vehicle inspections are mandatory for cars in some states before they can be driven, are we entering a phase where you will have to obtain a PC health check before a government IP czar will issue you with a license, or an Internet ID card, allowing you to access the web?
Of course, the only way companies or the government could know when your system becomes infected with malware is to have some kind of mandatory software or firewall installed on every PC which sends data to a centralized hub, greasing the skids for warrantless surveillance and other invasions of privacy.
Microsoft has been at the forefront of a bid to introduce Internet licensing as a means of controlling how people access and use the world wide web, an effort that has intensified over the course of the past year.

Why You Should Buy Organic Cotton
Thankfully there is an alternative. Some cotton growers are switching from the conventional way of growing cotton to growing it organically. There are many differences between conventional and organic cotton and they start from the very beginning of the growing process - soil preparation. Conventional farmers use synthetic fertilizers. After a few years the soil becomes saturated with fertilizers and will "burn" the crops. This causes the soil to be rendered useless. Not only will the farmer have to stop using the farm land for growing cotton, but it's also not fit to grow any other kind of plant either. Organic farmers use organic matter for fertilizing and they rotate their crops each year to avoid zapping the soil of its minerals.
Some conventional cotton farmers have started to use genetically modified seeds. These seeds cause the plant to grow faster and to yield more cotton than natural cotton plants. Organic farmers use only 100% natural seeds.
There are many pests to the cotton plant. Insects and weeds alike are a constant threat to the growing cotton. Conventional farmers combat these issues with insecticides and pesticides. The insecticides not only kill off the unwanted bugs, but also the beneficial ones as well. Most of these contain known cancer causing agents. These chemicals can end up in our water supply and can build up in humans and animals. Organic farmers don't use these harmful chemicals.
Choosing organic cotton is a healthy choice not only because it's better for our environment, but also because when we're wearing it close to our bodies(feminine products, clothing, blankets, baby items) we will not be absorbing all of those poisonous chemicals that went in to the making of the product. Thankfully the apparel industry is also seeing how important this is and you can now buy many products that are made from organic cotton. When we by organic cotton we are supporting the efforts of the farmers that are trying to make a difference in their community and on our planet.

Garlic oil shows protective effect against heart damage in diabetics
But new research just published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry shows a simple, natural therapy -- garlic oil -- may prevent this potentially deadly heart problem which inflames and weakens the heart muscle.
Background information included in the study, which was conducted by scientists from China Medical University and Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan, noted that people with diabetes have at least two times the risk of death from heart disease as others. In fact, heart disease is behind about 80 percent of all diabetes-related deaths. Dr. Wei-Wen Kuo, who headed the new research, and his colleagues gathered data from past studies which indicated garlic might protect against heart disease in general. They also found reports indicating garlic could help control the abnormally high blood sugar levels that occur in diabetes. So they decided to look specifically at whether garlic's multiple heart healthy benefits could add up to protection from diabetic cardiomyopathy.
In experiments with laboratory rats with diabetes, the scientists fed the animals either garlic oil or corn oil. The rodents who were given garlic oil experienced beneficial changes in their cardiovascular health -- changes associated with protection against heart damage. How was garlic responsible for these benefits? The scientists stated that garlic oil appears to have potent antioxidant properties. In all, they have identified more than 20 substances in garlic oil that may keep hearts and the cardiovascular system of diabetics healthier. "In conclusion, garlic oil possesses significant potential for protecting hearts from diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy," the report concluded.
More breaking garlic news: in a study just published in Journal of Natural Medicine, scientists from Krupanidhi College of Pharmacy in Bangalore, India, reported that garlic appears to have blood pressure lowering as well as cardioprotective abilities, too.
Editor's note: NaturalNews is opposed to the use of animals in medical experiments that expose them to harm. We present these findings in protest of the way in which they were acquired.

Hungarian Toxic Sludge Spill another disaster
An estimated 185 million gallons of toxic waste spilled after a reservoir burst at an aluminum refining plant, sweeping cars off the roads, damaging bridges and buildings, and forcing the evacuation of several towns. At least 7,000 residents of Western Hungary have been effected.
The sludge is a byproduct of the refining of bauxite into aluminum. It is extremely alkaline, causing it to burn through clothes and skin, and can be lethal if ingested.
Beyond the immediate damage to the region, EU authorities are worried that if the sludge reaches the Danube river, the spill could become in international ecological disaster.
One of Europe's main waterways, the Danube flows through Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova before emptying into the Black Sea. Emergency workers are pouring thousands of tons of plaster into the now affected Marcal river to prevent the sludge from flowing into the Danube, just 45 miles away.
By Foreign Policy MagazineEat broccoli and avoid arthritis
But despite the view of many that osteoarthritis is an inevitable part of aging, researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) believe they are hot on the trail of a way to prevent this form of arthritis from developing in the first place. The potential solution? A natural, bioactive compound called sulforaphane that is found in cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli.
The UEA scientists have already discovered sulforaphane blocks the enzymes that cause joint destruction in osteoarthritis. Now the same researchers are launching a new and groundbreaking project to investigate how sulforaphane may act to slow or even prevent the development of osteoarthritis. This initial study will pave the way for additional patient trials that could lead to safe and natural ways of preventing and treating this painful disease.
In a statement to the media, the UEA research team noted that broccoli has previously been associated with a reduced risk of cancer. But their study is the first major research into its effects on joint health. As part of their three year long project, the UEA scientists will also investigate the impact of other natural compounds on osteoarthritis -- including diallyl disulphide, a component of garlic that appears to slow the destruction of cartilage in laboratory models.
As reported previously in NaturalNews, phytochemical compounds in cruciferous vegetables are turning out to be remarkably powerful disease fighters and health builders. For example, scientists at Ohio State University's Comprehensive Cancer Center at Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and the Richard J. Solove Research Institute have discovered that a substance in broccoli and Brussels sprouts specifically blocks the growth of breast cancer cells (http://www.naturalnews.com/029204_b...). Other research has concluded eating broccoli can protect against asthma, too (http://www.naturalnews.com/025771_b...).

hyperthyroidism | Kelp, Bladderwrack is the key.
While individual cases may vary from this pattern (be sure to check with a naturopathic physician before self-treating any thyroid condition), most cases of goiter can be greatly improved or entirely eliminated through nutritional therapies involving iodine. One of the best sources for this important trace mineral is kelp.
Here's a collection of supporting statements about kelp and goiter as published in top natural health books:
How help (and iodine) helps prevent goiter
Kelp Description: Kelp is a type of sea vegetable that's rich in iron and several minerals. It is used as a supplement to support thyroid function. Indications: Goiter Hypothyroid Precautions: People with any type of thyroid disease should check with their doctors before supplementing kelp. Dosage: Take 2 to 4 capsules daily, or take as directed on the label or as advised by a health-care professional.- Prescription for Natural Cures: A Self-Care Guide for Treating Health Problems with Natural Remedies Including Diet and Nutrition, Nutritional Supplements, Bodywork, and More by James F. Balch, M.D. and Mark Stengler, N.D.
You've heard of kelp and seaweed, but what about bladder-wrack? That's the name of the kelp most often used medicinally, a name under which kelp products are often found. Bladderwrack is a tremendous source of iodine, which is essential for a healthy body. In children, a lack of iodine can result in delayed mental development or retardation. In adults, a deficiency of iodine can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition resulting when the thyroid operates at too low a level. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include extreme fatigue and lethargy, weight gain, and development of a goiter.
- Prescription for Natural Cures: A Self-Care Guide for Treating Health Problems with Natural Remedies Including Diet and Nutrition, Nutritional Supplements, Bodywork, and More by James F. Balch, M.D. and Mark Stengler, N.D.
Long-term excessive dietary intake of iodine (1,000 to 2,000 micrograms daily), while less common than iodine deficiency, can occur in people who eat large amounts of kelp and other sea vegetables and can also cause goiter. A number of commonly eaten foods have been shown to interfere with the use of iodine by the thyroid, thus reducing production of thyroid hormone and causing goiter. These foods, known as goitrogens, include vegetables in the Brassica family such as broccoli, cabbage, kale and mustard, millet, soybeans, pine nuts and some seed meals used in animal feeds.
- The Natural Pharmacy: Complete A-Z Reference to Natural Treatments for Common Health Conditions by Alan R. Gaby, M.D., Jonathan V. Wright, M.D., Forrest Batz, Pharm.D. Rick Chester, RPh., N.D., DipLAc. George Constantine, R.Ph., Ph.D. Linnea D. Thompson, Pharm.D., N.D.
However, eating iodine-rich foods, such as dulse and kelp (sea vegetation), is a more indirect and safe way to increase iodine and shrink goiters. Detoxified iodine is certainly a better choice, since it has not shown to produce hypothyroidism. The famous Edgar Cayce used to treat goiter and other thyroid conditions very successfully by giving his patients detoxified iodine. There are three products that meet his requirements: Magnascent, Atomic Iodine, and Atomidine. The latter two seem to be nearly identical.
- Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation: Unleash The Natural Healing Power That Lies Dormant Within You by Andreas Moritz
Kelp, either fresh or powdered, is the richest source of organic iodine. It helps correct mineral deficiencies and is a good protective food, valuable in overcoming poor digestion, preventing and overcoming goiter, and rebuilding and maintaining the proper function of all the glands. Kelp has been reported to be an aid in brain development; it offsets deficiencies of an inferior diet; it is beneficial for those suffering from impotency, anemia and emaciation.
- Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts and Seeds for Healthful Living by Dr. Joseph M. Kadans, N.D.
Because of its rich content of iodine, kelp is well-known in many lands as a remedy for preventing or treating goiter. However, some practitioners have reportedly found it to be helpful in normalizing a weak or enlarged prostate gland, and certain other male disorders. For example, Dr. Eric Powell of England says: The action of kelp on the prostate is to improve the nutrition of the organ and the circulation of the blood through the tissues.

Doctor admits that most MDs know nothing about nutrition, health
Even though most of the chronic diseases people face are related to poor diet, medical school training focuses largely on drugs, surgical procedures and other reactionary interventions instead. In fact, some medical schools do not even teach a single course in nutrition.
Back in the mid-1980s, the National Academy of Sciences published a report about the lack of nutrition education in medical schools, and advised that such schools begin offering at least 25 hours in nutrition education to their students. But a recent study published in Academic Medicine, a Journal of the Association of American Medical College, reveals that conditions have either remained unchanged or actually gotten worse.
Researchers from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill found that the average number of nutrition education hours offered by most medical colleges today has actually dropped by nearly half since six years ago. Today, only 25 percent of medical schools even offer the minimum recommended number of hours in nutrition education.
"Nutrition is really a core component of modern medical practice," emphasized Kelly M. Adams, registered dietitian at UNC and lead author of the study. "[Students] aren't getting enough [nutrition] instruction while in medical school."
For the past 15 years, UNC has been offering an online- and CD-ROM-based program that students can used to supplement their medical education. While the program has helped some, many medical school students still end up graduating with dismal knowledge in proper nutrition.

Breaking News| Expose an October Surprise False Flag Attack
Paul Joseph Watson has written a breakdown of a cynical effort by the corporate media to hype unsubstantiated terror attacks in European airports. “Among the possible targets in the suspected European terror plot are pre-security areas in at least five major European airports,” ABC News reports.
“Constant references to the Mumbai attack, transport hubs, airport lobbies and other ‘soft target’ chatter provide a reasonably clear indication as to who is really behind the ceaseless intensity of terror fearmongering we’ve been subjected to over the last week,” writes Watson. “Don’t be fooled, the government has blatantly seized upon some keyboard-warrior bluff spouted by Muslims on Internet forums and used it as a propaganda tool to try and frighten people into voting the establishment back into power, be they Democrats or Republicans.”
Let’s push Watson’s article up in Google Trends and expose this attempt to “neutralize the snowballing success of an anti-establishment political climate which threatens to seriously impinge upon the power monopoly of the Washington elite, the Israeli lobby, and the rest of the new world order kingpins who are sitting ever more uncomfortably in their ivory towers as the election gets closer and closer.”
